Cable Cars: For Mass Transport in the Philippines?

Postby Prozac » Tue Sep 13, 2022 11:35 am

Going around the world ... you will see cable cars and their uses. Cable transport is a broad class of transport modes
that have cables. They transport passengers and goods, often in vehicles called cable cars. The cable may be driven
or may be moved by pulling, sliding, sailing, and is being moved on cableways. The use of pulleys is a common element
of cable transport. They are often used in mountainous areas

In San Francisco, a cable car (usually known as a cable tram) is a type of cable railway used for mass transit in which
rail cars are hauled by a continuously moving cable running at a constant speed.

The Singapore Cable Car is a gondola lift providing an aerial link from Mount Faber on the main island of Singapore to
the resort island of Sentosa across Keppel Harbour.

The largest rotating aerial tramway in the world is Palm Springs Aerial Tramway. The tramway spans along the breathtaking
cliffs of Chino Canyon, transporting riders from the desert floor to the pristine wilderness of Mt. San Jacinto State Park.
Tram cars rotate slowly during the journey, offering picturesque and spectacular vistas of the rock formations and the
valley floor below.

The Ngong Ping Cable Car is one of Hong Kong's premier attractions. This 5.7 km (about 3.5 miles) ride offers breathtaking
views over the thick green peaks of Lantau Island and the shining South China Sea.

The Sandia Peak Tramway is an aerial tramway located adjacent to Albuquerque, New Mexico. It stretches from the northeast
edge of the city to Sandia Peak on the ridge line of the Sandia Mountains and has the world's third longest single span.

Snow Valley Mountain Resort is a ski resort located in Running Springs, California using gondola lifts for transport. It is the
oldest continually operating ski resort in Southern California and is also one of four ski resorts in the San Bernardino National
Forest. It has a total of 13 functioning lifts.

Why the sudden interest in cable cars? It all started when a neophyte lawmaker Robin Padilla suggested the use of aerial
cable cars as a means to solve the worsening traffic woes in Manila. The suggestion was met with chuckles and jeers and
despite viral socmed memes poking fun at the suggestion that aerial cable cars are for tourists and not made for mass
transport, I still maintain that it can be done with careful study and planning.

Then somebody commented mass transport is the shuttling of thousands of passengers in one motion and it is not possible
with cable cars as they can accommodate only four passengers. And cable cars are only used in mountainous areas. Well,
Manila is not the only city in the Philippines - Baguio or Tagaytay can make use of it if there's a chance with their own traffic
anguish. San Francisco is hilly, but there's a part of San Francisco specifically from Market St. to Castro District that is flat and
the cable tram (which is for mass transport having 9.7 million people taking a ride on them each year) didn't seem to have a
problem functioning in that area.

Alright, we admit that cable trams are slow. But where can you find a place in Manila that is fast-paced ... because the traffic
is making it slow.

If I were the Senator or a congressman, I will not totally shut my eyes to the plan as it has its own sound basis as the previous
administration has been looking into the matter as a viable alternative to solve traffic misery.

And Robin found an ally with the Dept. of Transportation as they have made already made some studies and it looks like it is
feasible, especially in areas that can't be served by roads and rails.

And Latin America specifically Medellin Colombia, Mexico City, Brazil, and Guayaquil Ecuador had already demonstrated that
cable car technology is a viable mode of transport connecting marginal hillside neighborhoods to the city metro system.

It is just a matter of where and when, but it is a viable means of transport but the cost needs another debate.

There are the things I want you guys to comment on if you can: Your comment will really be appreciated.

1. I just want how you feel about these suggestions of possibly using cable cars as a viable way to solve
traffic congestion knowing that the Duterte administration has been mulling over this and even the Dept
of Transportation has made feasibility studies on how it can be done.

2. This is quite a baptism of fire for the neophyte senator Robin Padilla when his suggestions were met
with skepticism and hecklers enjoyed the free ride when the internet was bombarded with political memes,
sneers and jeers.

3. Is taunting, deriding, insulting, and lampooning ... the new features of the ever-changing socmed milieu
... and only the brave and the daring can share their ideas, conceptualize and plan ... and the faint-hearted
will cower and cringe in fear of public humiliation and ignominy?

4. Will the internet climate be as tolerant, permissive, and receptive to listening and discussing weird and
unconventional ideas such as this one ... and not pin one down at the slightest provocation?

Noah was belittled, insulted and frowned upon by everyone when he built the ark.

In modern world, visionaries are always being bombarded by mockery especially these days when everyone seems to think that they have the "voice" due to social media.

pwede ang cable cars sa mabubundok na lugar tulad ng Baguio City.

Pero sabihin mong cable car sa Metro Manila to ease traffic, sobrang patawa at katarantaduhan.

It does not need to solve the traffic problem because the need and demand for buses, cars and jeepneys will always be there.
But, having cable cars can give another option for consumers, especially if you can utilize the space above waterfronts or rivers.
Yokohama's port zone is flat but they have cable cars operating there for people to use as an alternative option.

You said it right Xamurai. What I don't understand is why these visionaries have to experience this kind of travesty
and ridicule ... the kind that pinches the soul and bruises egos and pride.

The way ordinary netizens speak in socmed they seemed self-entitled - the sense of superiority and cockiness is there
and there is no remorse whatsoever with how they use their language. Their one-liners were done in the spirit of fun
... if you were hurt in the process ... this is the price you have to pay for entering the inner sanctum.

Indeed cable cars or San Francisco cable trams will never ease traffic woes. The mere fact that cable trams are
slow ... its speed will become turtle-paced when operating in Metro Manila. And its presence maybe even make
traffic problems balloon like a monster.

The only consolation it can give us is that it gives us an option that if riding a bus or jeepney fails there an
available alternative waiting. Or they can make use of areas of land (as Xamurai suggested )above rivers, lakes
, or seas starting from Valenzuela- Malabon - Navotas - Manila - Pasay - Paranaque - Las Pinas - Muntinlupa -
Taguig- Pasig- Marikina - Quezon City - Caloocan - back to Valenzuela.

The role of the thumb is to never use major streets as the way. LRT and MRT have already charred and scalded
us and we should take them as important reminders of our indescretions.

I agree with you. The Philippine peso has its lowest ebb at 57 per dollar and commodities like sugar,
salt, rice, and chicken skyrocketing ... the ripple effect can be felt nationwide.

So maybe cable trams in the Philippines are far-fetched ... and are highly unlikely in this day and age
when Build ... build ... build are strange bedfellows with the peso kowtowing to the mighty dollar.

CAUSE OF TRAFFIC:

METRO MANILA IS CONGESTED. MARAMING TAO NA ANG NAGSISIKSIKAN DAHIL NANDIDITO ANG SENTRO NG KALAKALAN. MAS MALAKI ANG SUWELDO SA METRO MANILA COMPARE SA IBANG REGIONS.

HERE'S MY SOLUTION FOR THIS TRAFFIC:

1) DECENTRALIZATION OF METRO MANILA
2) DEVELOP INFRASTRUCTURES IN OTHER POTENTIAL BUSINESS CENTER CITIES LIKE CEBU, DAVAO, SUBIC, BACOLOD, ETC. 'WAG MASYADONG MAG-FOCUS SA METRO MANILA IN BUILDING INFRA. BUILD TRAINS, SUBWAYS AND OTHER MEANS OF TRANSPO IN OTHER POTENTIAL CITIES. BY BUILDING INFRAS, IT WILL ATTRACT INVESTORS. AT KAPAG MAY INVESTORS, MAY TRABAHO. HINDI NA KAILANGAN PANG LUMUWAS PAPUNTANG MAYNILA ANG MGA NASA PROBINSIYA.
3) MAGKAROON NG IISANG MINIMUM WAGE SA BUONG PILIPINAS, PARA HINDI NA PUMUNTA PA NG METRO MANILA ANG MGA TAO NA GALING NG PROBINSIYA PARA MAGTRABAHO.
4) LIMIT THE SALES OF CARS. IMPOSE A BIGGER TAX.
5) 'WAG PAYAGANG BUMILI NG KOTSE YUNG MGA WALANG PARKING LOTS. LIMIT CAR OWNERSHIP TO ONE PER HOUSEHOLD
6) MAS PALAKASIN PA ANG FREE AND FAST TRANSPORT SYSTEM NG BANSA PARA MABAWASAN ANG MGA PRIVATE CARS SA KALSADA (WELL GINAGAWA NA ITO NG GOVERNMENT, KAILANGAN NA LANG PALAKASIN AT I-DEVELOP)

PROMISE, HINDI CABLE CARS ANG SAGOT SA TRAFFIC. wag kayo magpapaniwala kay Boy Sili.

Points taken. I actually love them and hope to see them, in reality, one day.

By the way what happened to Duterte's offering cash and goods to encourage city-dwellers to move out of the greater
capital region in an ambitious program called “Back to the Province,” one of the most aggressive attempts in decades
to lure Filipinos to the countryside?

Was that ningas-kugon? Or the plan has a meteoric rise and then just fade into oblivion? Or become lost to obscurity
after his term?

Maybe we can start acknowledging the other uses of cable cars and tram cars. And depending on where you are the use
are varied.

1. If you are in a cable car in Singapore - the use of the gondola lift is to transport tourists.
2. If you are in Snow Valley Mountain Resort, the use is to transport skiers by means of a lift.
3. If you are in Sweden, the Norsjö aerial tramway is used to transport cargoes, ore, lead, zinc & sulfur.
4. If you are in Hongkong, the Peak Tramway is used to transport Hongkong residents as well as tourists.
The same goes with San Francisco tram cars being used as passenger transport.
