Bikinis throughout history

Image

While two-piece bathing suits may have existed since the Greco Romans, French car engineer Louis Réard created the modern bikini in May 1946. He named it after the Bikini Atoll nuclear tests, assuming people would be shocked by their revealing nature. Girls and women may flock to the beach in bikinis without much thought these days, but back then showing off your belly button was surprising and even scandalous. We all know how tricky it can be to find the perfect two-piece swimsuit (Bo Derek and Farrah Fawcett looked fab, but they rocked one-pieces!), so we’re paying tribute to the most iconic bikinis in history that got us bathing beauties where we are today. Happy 55th, birthday, bikini! May you retain your beauty and elasticity for many years to come.

Image

Marilyn Monroe 1951

Marilyn Monroe flaunted her curves in a ruffle-trimmed polka-dot two-piece circa 1951. Who knew that this style would make a return?

Image

Ursula Andress in “Dr. No,” 1962.

When the first Bond girl emerged from the ocean in a white bikini with a knife belt, men and women alike watched in awe.

Image

Bridgette Bardot in “The Girl in the Bikini,” 1952

Also known as “Manina, la fille sans voiles” and “The Lighthouse Keeper’s Daughter,” this French film kick-started Bardot’s career and the popularity of two-piece swimsuits.

Image

Raquel Welch in ”One Million Years B.C.,” 1966

This prehistoric, fur-trimmed bikini wasn’t designed to get wet, but it sure received a lot of attention. Also, how smoking is Welch’s body? Yowza.

Image

The first “Sports Illustrated” Swimsuit Issue, 1964

Editor Andre Laguerre came up with the concept of an annual issue of babes in bikinis to boost sales in the winter months, which have less sporting events on the calendar. Berlin-born model Babette March appeared on the first cover (and a five-page spread) and the issue is credited with legitimizing the bikini.

Image

Carrie Fisher in “Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi,” 1983

Princess Leia’s metal and leather bikini showed off her figure that was previously hidden under cloaks and tunics. But then again, anyone would look hot next to Jabba the Hutt.

Image

Annette Funicello in “Beach Party,” 1963

In the first of many beach party films, this bikini-clad girl partied in the sand with her on-screen boyfriend, Frankie Avalon. Before wearing a two-piece she was the star of the original “Mickey Mouse Club.”

Image

Elizabeth Taylor

The late screen queen looks picture perfect in her lovely silvery-blue one-piece. We know it's not a bikini but it's just too beautiful not to put in.

Image

Salma Hayek in ”From Dusk Till Dawn,” 1996

Pre-Britney Spears, this seductive club performer danced with a snake and snapped into vampire mode, a scene guys won’t soon forget.

Image

Sally Field as Gidget 1965

As '60s surfer girl Gidget, Sally Field rocked the itsy bitsy teenie weenie stunning bikinis.

Image

Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft in 'Tomb Raider' 2011

As the buff and fearless beauty in Tomb Raider, Ms Jolie showed us how to explore the world in a just a bikini.

Image

Demi Moore in ”Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle,” 2003

While Cameron Diaz worked her white bikini on the surf, it was 41-year-old co-star Demi Moore clad in a black bikini that really turned heads and put the famous actress back on the map.

Image

Halle Berry in “Die Another Day,” 2002

The Oscar-winning actress paid tribute to Ursula Andress in a similar orange bikini with a knife belt. It wasn’t quite as awesome as the original, but still made an impression.

The Best Swimsuit for Your Body Type
By Alison Syrett, Lucky magazine

When morning talks shows and local newspapers dole out their seasonal swimsuit shopping advice, I'm usually pretty disappointed by the lack of body types represented. What about the women who don't resemble fruit? (Or aren't boy shaped-the third "one of these things is not like the other" category I've never quite understood. Couldn't they say "banana?" Or is that somehow more offensive than "apple" and "pear" shaped?)

As a short-waisted busty girl with very narrow hips myself, I've had enough of this three options-only nonsense. For my fellow frustrated swimwear shoppers, I've found flattering silhouettes for a wide variety of figures, all available online. You might discover that you fall in more than one group, so don't be afraid to mix and match tops and bottoms or even buy a couple different styles. Because hey, when you look great in a bikini and maillot, don't question your good fortune-just get both!

Image
Super Slim
Whether you're lanky or petite, the key is to fake curves where there aren't any. Feminine ruffles should do the trick.

Image
Wide Hips
Don't be tempted to cover up your lower half with a boyshort or thick-strapped bikini-you'll look larger than you are. Instead, choose a high cut brief in a solid color, accompanied by your top of choice.

Image
Short Waisted
Repeat after me: "Tankinis are not my friend." No, but seriously...you want a string top and low-riding bikini bottom-it helps to lengthen your waist.

Image
Athletic Build
Muscular girls look good in sporty suits, but that doesn't mean they should wear the same Speedo one-pieces as the local swim team. Color-blocked bikinis inspired by scuba and surf are much better choice and right on trend for spring.

Image
Hourglass
When you have the proportions of a pinup, it's best to go for retro-inspired pieces that will play up your va-voom curves and teeny-tiny waist.

Image
Full Figured
Don't you dare buy another black swimsuit. An abstract print and subtle ruching looks just as good and is way more fun. (This style goes up to a size 20-for more great plus size options, click here.)

Image
Busty Underwire
Cups will provide all the lift and support you need.

Image
Long Waisted
If you have the one body type that actually looks good in a cut-out one-piece, you're morally obligated to wear one.

Swimsuits Through The Decades

From ancient bathers to pin ups to butt-baring bikinis, we've come a long way when it comes to swim gear. Take a walk through fashion history with us, and see how far we've come.
By Julie Pereira, Thread Blogger

Image

Ancient Rome - Spotted on mosaics thousands of years old, these athletic ladies were rocking the very first bikinis, although historians insist there is little evidence these looks were worn for swimming. That was done in the nude. How do you say "scandalous" in Latin?

Image

1910s - We're not sure exactly what these gorgeous bathing beauties are so happy about--these bulky "swim costumes" were required by law for all women to wear while at the beach--you could be fined for showing too much leg! The original "two piece" consisted of a gown and trousers, fabricated with (heavy) materials that wouldn't become see-through when wet.

Image

1920s - We're getting closer to the modern day suit. This slimmer style was popularized in the '20s by Australian "underwater ballerina" Annette Kellerman. The close-fitting tank onesie, while tame to us, caused quite a stir amongst the more pearl-clutchy citizens of the world who deemed the suit "indecent." Too bad for them--the trend caught on like wildfire.

Image

1940s - With WWII came the birth of the "pin up" look. Tame bikinis with just a whiff of midriff and high-sitting bottoms began popping up after the war. The suits got their name from Bikini Atoll--the site of several atomic bomb tests--because those who saw the the suits were blown away. Kind of morbid, huh?

Image

1950s - When we think of "retro" swimsuits, this is the kind of silhouette most people think of. Created to enhance hourglass curves while still maintaining some modesty, these styles are synonymous with both Esther Williams and Marilyn Monroe and they're still popular among vintage fiends today.

Image

Early '60s - Somebody call Moondoggy--it's a beach party! The new, belly-button-baring bikini went hand-in-hand with the youth movement of the early '60s, but was still relatively tame.

Image

Late '60s - This gal is taking the Flower Child thing a bit literally, but the late 1960s was a time for liberation. Enter: the skimpier bikini. Hippies and entertainers alike (Cher was a big fan in her early days) began rocking bikini tops as a sexier answer to separates.

Image

1970s - If you thought the '60s were free, the '70s took it all to new levels. String bikinis brought with them lower bottoms and barely-there tops.

Image

Late '80s - The late '80s and early '90s were all about high-cut legs and neon, tropical prints. The idea was that the higher cut made legs look leaner and longer, when in reality it just made everyone look like they were walking around with a wedgie. Dark days.

Image

Late '90s - One word: tankinis.

Image

Early 2000's - The early aughts experimented with the one piece in...let's say, "inventive," ways. Thus, the monokini was born--technically a one piece, but one with a healthy amount of skin still showing.

Image

Late 2000's - With the surge in popularity of all things Brazilian--from waxes to butt lifts and beyond--the triangle string bikini saw a boom. Most notable about this style, though, is the cut of the bottoms--specifically designed to show off a hefty dose of haunch.

Image

Now: The New Modest - Thanks to stars like Taylor Swift and Beyonce rocking them, more covered-up styles are becoming more popular for beachgoers and getting modern updates. Strategic cutouts and plunging necklines are tasteful, not slutty, while even two-pieces are getting the retro treatment with high-waisted bottoms and long-lined tops.

Image

Now: The New Sexy - But don't fret--bikinis aren't going anywhere. This season you'll see classic bandeaus in bright colors as well as athletic, colorblocked styles and suits with unexpectedly tough accents. We've come a long way since the original two piece!

Nice featurette. Might you do similarly for speedos (to their present-day incarnation, the fugly trunks)?
