I can speak behalf of the whole west because I live here and where I live is one of the places with more "wordly" and aware people and most still don't know who she is. I know of her British movies because I follow her career through Bollywood sites. Most of her unknown British movies have never even been released here.
Getting on Time Magazine's 100 most influential list (there is no NY edition btw) is an indicator of the editors knowing of her, not normal people. The only other Hollywood movie she was in was "The Last Legion" and it did not even get a wide release and was a flop. She is not doing a movie with Meryl Streep; it was an Internet rumor.
Ok so now thats a different issue? How can I know how much other admirers claim her to be popular? I can speak of myself. I say she is known, but she is not a big name in west.
You cant speak of the whole west. The whole west consists of many countries. May be you really dint bother to know how much ppl know about her. You cant expect them to come out and sing songs about her to make you aware about their knowledges.
Time Magazine's editors chose the list but they are not dumb to put ppl whom no one knows. Many factors are considered and international popularity is definitely one of them. You just can ignore the girl, saying that no one knows her but one random editor likes her to be in TOP 100.
We dont live in the west but we are not ignorant.
Totally unknown ppl from India dont get a chance to be on Oprah, Letterman etc.
You are saying that she is not popular as people claim her to be and its true, but you are trying to put her down by saying that she is totally a stranger in west, which is FALSE!!!
