MY FAVOURITE EVENING GOWNS AT MISS UNIVERSE

1. CATRIONA GRAY, Philippines, Miss Universe 2018

Who can ever resist the lava gown? It became a YouTube sensation in 2018 up to the first quarter of 2019. What more can I say about this Mak Tumang creation? It's definitely iconic!

Image
2. STEFANIA FERNANDEZ, Venezuela, Miss Universe 2009

This red gown really suits Stefania and makes her look like the Scarlett O'Hara character from the "Gone With The Wind" novel-turned-Hollywood-movie.

Image
3. MARIGONA DRAGUSHA, Kosovo, Miss Universe 2009 2nd Runner-up

Marigona transformed into this Audrey Hepburn classic character, "Holly Golightly", from the 1961 Hollywood blockbuster, "Breakfast At Tiffany's", during the evening gown competition in 2009. What a beautiful sight she was!

Image Image
4. EVELINA PAPANTONIOU, Greece, Miss Universe 2001 1st Runner-up

Evelina really pulled it off this simple light pink evening gown with so much sophistication and joie de vivre!

Image
5. COURTNEY GIBBS, USA, Miss Universe 1988 semifinalist

Courtney's black evening gown with sweetheart neckline was timeless. It made her look like Grace Kelly who graced the Miss Universe stage in Taiwan. Too bad, the Chinese judges didn't want another Caucasian or Latina to win at the time.

Image
6. MIRIAM QUIAMBAO, Philippines, Miss Universe 1999 1st Runner-up

Miriam's Halston gown was memorable in the '90s decade of Miss Universe history. She really gave justice to the dress as she sashayed it on the Miss Universe stage in Chaguaramas, Trinidad and Tobago.

Image
7. MIYAKO MIYAZAKI, Japan, Miss Universe 2003 4th Runner-up

This MTV bra-and-skirt ensemble really made my jaw drop when I first saw it on television. I thought this number was only good at the MTV Awards but no! Miyako executed it so well on the Miss Universe stage which made the whole thing really unforgettable.

Image Image
8. DESIREE VERDADERO, Philippines, Miss Universe 1984 3rd Runner-up

This vintage Rene Salud creation needs to be shown on the Miss Universe stage again because the vibrant colours, silhouette and design are so Filipino. I don't mind if Gazini Ganados wears this dress to an evening formal function at this year's Miss Universe event in Atlanta, Georgia. I know she will rock it.

Image
9. KACI FENNELL, Jamaica, Miss Universe 2014 4th Runner-up

The back of this red evening gown is just so sexy! Whew! Kaci made this gown look so sultry and hot on stage!

Image
10. ARIELLA ARIDA, Philippines, Miss Universe 2013 3rd Runner-up

This "yellow-is-the-colour-of-joy" Alfredo Barraza number was supposedly a rented run-of-the-mill pageant gown from Colombia but, somehow, Ariella, was able to make it look so fluidly efforless on stage during her evening gown competition in Moscow. It complemented her sexy figure, dusky complexion and long, shiny jet-black hair. I totally loved this number on her!

Image
11. ALICIA MACHADO, Venezuela, Miss Universe 1996

This plain evening gown made Alicia look so sweet and charming on stage. It gave her a clean, uncomplicated silhouette when she descended from a flight of stairs as Liberace's "Candelabra" was played on three pianos in the background.

Image Image
12. EVA SISO CASALS, Spain, Miss Universe 2001 semifinalist

A lot of people didn't like this evening gown on her but I actually liked it. It gave her that Spanish flair and spunk on stage. I was really disappointed when Eva failed to advance in the Top 5 of the competition that night. Had she been included instead of India, then it would've been one of the best top fives in the history of Miss Universe.

Image
13. DENISE QUINONES, Puerto Rico, Miss Universe 2001

I personally believe that this evening gown became the mold and pattern for the succeeding Miss Puerto Rico gowns just like the gowns of Zuleyka Rivera in 2006 and Kiara Ortega at her local pageant in 2018. However, this number looked really good on Denise. It complemented her radiant smile and oozing confidence on stage.

No, I didn't forget it.

These were the candidates whose evening gowns I didn't like:

1. Zukeyka Rivera. I just simply didn't like it because it came from Denise's mold. The only difference was that Zuleyka's gown was made of wires. I was never a fan of Zuleyka to begin with which was I why I tend to equate her wire gown to that of a high-class-wannabe social relations officer liaising for clients with demands from the nether region. Her aura bespoke of it as well.

2. Oxana Fedorova. Her gown looked like it came from Bed Bath & Beyond. Did she carry it well? Yes, she absolutely did.

3. Riyo Mori. Her gown looked so matronly to me. It also reminded me of Aldevinco Shopping Centre in Davao City in the early '80s during my yearly visits there from Canada as a kid. Looking at the pattern and design of Riyo's gown made me think that she could be calling for kulintang players and batik makers from Aldevinco soon.

4. Taliana Vargas's gown looked like it was inspired from distorted kites. Yes, the twirl was nice but the kite's loose tails were still there. Alas, she couldn't get rid of them no matter how much she tried to shake them off! Perhaps, cans would help her lose those loose tails by dragging them to the ground and by creating sounds for the newlyweds.

5. Dayana Mendoza. I was never her fan which was why I didn't like the construction of her yellow gown. To me, she looked like a "walking warning" that came out from a traffic light. Her scary-looking make-up on finals night even added to the warning. If I were to choose between her gown and Ariella's, I'd still go for Ariella's not because the latter was a Filipino candidate but because she sashayed it better on stage than the former.

Nguyen desperately wants to call attention to himself. He'll say anything to stir and to draw a reaction from Filipinos. So predictable, time and again!

They are my opinions, not yours.
It becomes an entirely different story when somebody tells me, "Oh, you forgot to mention the iconic gown of Zuleyka!", which, as a result, I enlisted the gowns I didn't like. IMO, there was nothing special about the gowns of Zuleyka and Dayana. You easily got impressed by Zuleyka's just because the gown was made of wires??!! The design was a copycat of Denise's, for crying out loud! The wires were the only elements that changed the whole ensemble! It even got worse when the wearer was Zuleyka because I never liked her from the get-go. Dayana's gown was so common among Venezuelan gowns. Irene Saez already wore that same design during her pre-pageant activity at Miss Universe in 1981 as well as Yahaira Vera, May Brandt and Eva Lisa Leung in their respective pageants way before you were born. Oxana was my most favourite Miss Universe of all time but just because she wore something that was merely a wrap-around piece of white fabric that was inspired from a glorified bathrobe or white blanket after sex didn't mean that I also had to like it. Riyo's gown was so Aldevinco-inspired in the '80s, which was why I didn't like it. Just because it was made by a well-known fashion designer didn't mean that I also had to like it. So don't judge me to have poor taste in fashion because you don't know me from Adam. It goes the same way that I don't judge your grammar at all.

Lets not do revisionist history on Miss Universe 1988. It is available to see in YouTube and you can see that there were 12 judges that year and only one was Asian....so the top 5 domination of Asians that year was by merit and performance, not favoritism. I read an interview by one of the judges and she said the interview portion was what sealed the deal with the judges for the Asian contestants.

Lovely thread! :hx

Here are my favorites: IN ORDER

1. Catriona Gray’s lava red gown. Amazing! What can I say? A phoenix indeed!
2. Marigona Dragusha’s violet masterpiece. Classy and regal. Perfect!
3. Miriam Quiambao’s Halston powder blue gown. ( she was Miss Universe’s icon personified then)
4. Natalie Glebova’s white evening gown - simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.
5. Desiree Verdadero’s floral gown. I just think it’s gorgeous and fashion forward!
6. Oxana Federova’s white gown. She made it look like a masterpiece. Bravo!
7. Diana Harkusha’s purple gown. I love the cut and the patterns!

Not a fan of

Zuleyka’s gown. Sorry. I don’t get this one.
