Why Filipinos Are Not So Into Miss World?

Pageant pundits, self-styled pageant experts, conspiracy theorists and even simple anti- Filipino critics have all tried to answer that one million dollar question that for years has been baffling the international pageant community and possibly even Mrs. Julia Morley herself.

The Filipinos who are known to embrace pageants like ducks to water are proving themselves too resistant against Miss World; a pageant they hold in varying degrees of tolerance and even contempt.

Such treatment from the Filipinos is perplexing indeed considering that the Philippines is actually one of the most successful in the world's oldest pageant and more importantly since it is Miss World Organization that gave and did more to the Philippines in terms of charities, project funding and financial endowment through the organization's Beauty With a Purpose program than Miss Universe, Miss International or even the home-grown Miss Earth organizations.

To many observers, the answers should be obvious and simple. Considering that the Philippines is a former US colony it is but natural for the Filipinos to be more into Miss Universe and find it more relatable as they did with anything American. Miss International, on the other hand is their stronghold, where the Philippines is winningest and thus the Filipinos might feel indebted with gratitude. Miss Earth of course is their own.

To the anti-Filipino bashers; the Filipinos are simply bitter losers who begrudged the elusiveness of the blue crown from their past candidates' grasp. This sentiment/accusation of course can easily be debunked by simply observing and reviewing how the Filipinos behave toward other pageants where their candidates failed. As "supposed" bitter losers the Filipinos remained loyal and supportive of Miss Universe despite and after a decade-long (2000-2009) placement drought. And of course, it must also be noted that even after decades of winless participation, it was only after 2014 and that year's dubious result that the Filipinos took a critical stand against Miss Intercontinental and even that is now being swept under the rag by the Filipinos who are again supportive of the pageant. Truth be told, the Filipinos are in fact more gracious than other nationalities in handling defeats.

Again, the question: Why we, Filipinos, are not so into Miss World? Are we simply playing hard to get? here's my take...

1. Miss World Came Too Late and at The Wrong time in Ph

Image
Vivien Lee Austria - The First Filipina at Miss World

The first time the Philippines participated at Miss World is on 1966.
In comparison, the Philippines has been sending representatives at Miss Universe and Miss International since 1952 and 1960 respectively or from the pageants' inception.
Using the adage "the early bird catches the worms," we can say that the younger pageants (Miss Universe and MI) had time advantage on their side and were already established brands with well entrenched presence among Filipino pageant fans at the time when MW entered the Philippine pageant scene.
Worst, MW entered the scene at the wrong time. On 1966, the Filipinos were still basking on the afterglow of Gemma Cruz' victory at Miss International two years earlier. At the time we can safely assume that any pageant related discussions evolved and were turned into discourse about and with Miss International and Gemma Cruz as main subjects. Subjects that were eclipsed only by the back to back victories of Gloria Diaz at Miss Universe on 1969 and Aurora Pijuan at MI on 1970. Followed by Margarita Moran's Miss Universe win on 1973 and the eventual hosting by the Philippines of Miss Universe on 1974.

During those times, things about Miss Universe and MI were headline news while MW related stories were relegated to the inside pages probably near the obituaries.
To this author, MW could have fared better and secure as much followers as Miss Universe and MI did had it pulled for the Philippines and entered the Philippine pageant scene before 1964 or on the 80's when the Filipinos are already in the look out for a new pageant stage to conquer.

2. The Evangeline Pascual Conundrum.

Image
Twice cheated of the Miss World 1973 crown
Worse than, even the Filipinos themselves may have thought; Evangeline Pascual's failure to win and inherit the 1973 MW title and crown greatly influenced the Filipinos attitude and impressions about Miss World.
As many know, Pascual was named first runner-up to USA's Marjorie Wallace during the 1973 edition of the pageant. The placement, the highest ever reached by a Filipina that time was of course well received and celebrated by the Filipinos until stories and information on what supposedly happened and how Pascual lost the crown on the finals of the competition made their way in the Philippines weeks after the pageant's conclusion.

Stories were told about how Pascual and Wallace supposedly earned the same number of votes/score to tie the competition. To break the tie, the organizers elected the American actor Gregory Peck to cast the tie breaking vote that eventually went to favor Wallace.

While the Filipinos held Peck blameless, they nevertheless faulted the organization for a decision they considered disadvantageous and unfair to their representative. To them, the organizer should have had the prudence of choosing a non-partisan judge, someone who is neither a Filipino or an American to do the decision making.
To the Filipinos, Peck was put on the spot and in a position where he did not have a real option but to vote to his compatriot or face the wrath of the Americans had he given the crown to the Pinay beauty queen and deprive USA of their very first MW crown.

Despite the belief that they were shortchanged, the Filipinos managed to move on from the debacle thanks largely to the fact that months earlier, Moran won Miss Universe at the expense of another American.

Sadly though, as the Filipinos were in the process of forgetting the unpopular move by MWO during the 1973 pageant and accepted the defeat Wallace was dethroned for failing to fulfill "the basic requirements of the job."

As First Runner-up, the Filipinos expected their compatriot Pascual to be promoted to the MW "throne." That did not materialize. It was reported that MWO only asked Pascual to assume the duties and responsibilities of a Miss World but not the title and the crown which the Pinay of course refused.

The Filipinos, of course viewed that "supposed" acts by MWO as a great insult, that rubbed the wound caused by MWO's lack of prudence during the pageant. To the Filipinos, Pascual was being cheated of the crown not just once but twice.

Did the Philippine hosting of Miss Universe 1974 cost Pascual the 1973 MW crown?

For years, those stories were retold, Generations of Filipino fans grew hearing and being told of those stories. Stories as to how Pascual was cheated of the crown, as to how MWO did not want a Filipina to be their queen,. or how Pascual was not offered the MW title as a punishment for the Philippines' hosting of Miss Universe 1974.

Subsequently on 2011, Pascual, finally clarified the issue (which many Filipinos suspect to be made under duress or pressure) and announced (or lied) that she was in fact offered the crown and the title. But at the time Pascual made the clarificartion, the damage has been done, MW's reputation among Filipino fans was already in tatters.

Also, Pascual's 2011 statement did not jive to what she said in previous interviews where she claimed that the pageant was unfair to Asian candidates and that she was not offered the same prizes (such as the crown) that Wallace won had she accepted the offer.

3. Lack of Interest and Inadequate Coverage By Philippine Media.

As we all know, a product or a business grow depending on its marketing and promotion. Some rely on word of mouth marketing while others effectively use the media for their growth and in the case of the MW brand in the Philippines, one of the factors that caused the pageant's lack of popularity stems on the what can be described as lack of interest from the Philippine media and the pageant's inadequate coverage specially when compared to the coverage/reporting that the other Major pageants usually receive.

While Miss Universe continuously enjoys an annual extensive coverage and telecast since the '70's, MW on its part only have a semblance of annual telecast in the Philippines on the '90's beginning on 1993 when Ruffa Gutierrez represented the Philippines and the broadcasting begun to be an on and off affair again on the advent of the new millennium.[/size]
Image
The first Pinay Miss World, Megan Young, failed to make Miss World popular in the Philippines

Even the victory of Megan Young on 2013 failed to increase the Filipinos' awareness and interest of the pageant that when shown on Philippine TV failed to generate good ratings yearly. Of course its dismal performance can be attributed more as failure of the pageant's broadcast partner GMA 7 rather than to MWO; as one of the TV station's weak points concern its ability or lack of marketing savvy in comparison to its rival and Miss Universe and ME partner network ABS-CBN. The latter is known for its ability to prick the public's curiosity and interest by an almost "dramatic" handling and promotion of pageants in a way that makes the public feel that it will be their great lost if they failed to watch Miss Universe and ME and the other pageants they broadcast in comparison to GMA's oftentimes late promotion as we experienced again last year when the station only made it officially known to the public that they will show MW barely days before the actual telecast date.

And of course, it can also be attributed to the reality that the international media as a whole are more interested in Miss Universe and how its queen reigns thus giving the Philippine media more Miss Universe related news and stories to tell.

4. No On-stage Competition.

This one reason can be connected to number 3 and explains why the pageant failed to generate interest from the viewing public which oftentimes results to the apprehensions of the Philippine media to cover and broadcast the pageant.

The Filipino public, both pageant and non-pageant viewers, watch beauty pageants for entertainment, for the human interest, for the drama and the excitement that these competitions entail.

The Filipinos (just like the rest of the world) watch a beauty pageant to see how their representative fare, how s/he competed against the rest, or if their representative went unplaced and missed the first cut; they at least want to see and understand how the eventual winner slayed the competition. In other word, the Filipinos wanted to take part in the winner's journey even as just mere spectators. MWO sadly deprived them of such as the show being telecast is more of an awarding ceremony instead of a competition where most of the Filipinos (that mostly consisted by non-pageant fans) are being left clueless as to how such conclusion was achieved.

Its a pity really, considering that on the '90's the pageant was starting to gain momentum in the country since the MW editions being shown and watched by the Filipinos during those times were actual competition where just like in Miss Universe and the then Miss Asia Pacific Quest they actually witnessed the candidates fought ON-STAGE in Swimsuit, Long Gown and Interviews.

As Julia Morley took those televised on-stage competition out as she inherited the reign from her deceased husband the Filipinos interest on the pageant again plummeted.

Image
Image
How did they become Top 5?

5. The Politics and Damaged Image of Miss World
Image
Liliana Tanoesoedibjo, chairman of the Miss Indonesia Organization, sat as Judge

To the Filipinos, MW is the most politicized among pageants. It is one that favors greatly the representatives of former UK colonies and territories. Where a head of state or even national directors were not only allowed but were invited to sit in the judging panel. Where sponsorship, possible hosting gig and the likes can bribed a placement or even victory. Perceptions such as these were further strengthened in the absence of an actual on-stage competition to clue the viewers as to why such and such candidates made the cut and why such and such candidates failed.

Furthermore, how MWO handled situations such as the one involving Miss Canada on 2014 also damaged its image among Filipino fans.

Before the anti-Filipino critics claimed that the Filipinos' derision of MW as a mere "Cooking Show" is but a product of their sourgraping; it must be pointed out that while the Filipinos were quick on their praise of well deserved placements or victory, the Filipinos were just as quick to question what to them were undeserved placements as shown how vocal they were on their criticism of Gwen Ruais' second place finish on 2011.

Conclusion:

So, what's to be done? What can MWO do to make the Filipinos love MW? Bribe them with placements and crowns? Definitely not! Such failed to work even after 2013.

What MWO MUST do to gain not only the Filipinos but other nations' trust and patronage is to clean their acts and address the issues that have been hounding the pageant for years.

The first thing they have to do is to listen to the complains and to acknowledge that there are wrongs in their system. The second is to heed the suggestions worthy of doing; and lastly is to institute changes that can make MW believable again.

Of the five factors I enumerated as to why the Filipinos are not so into Miss World the organization MUST first addressed those that concern their image.

Considering that even the pageants overzealous and hardcore supporters cannot explain the basis of elimination and the succeeding cuts after the first cut was made, the perception or image of MW being a cooking show cannot be cleared. Thus it is paramount for MW to come clean and made its criteria or basis clear and public.

Seeing that having a head of state or a national director as a pageant judge did not sit well among the Filipinos (and probably even among other nationalities) MWO must therefore put an end to the practice of making them sit as judges and do these NDs the service of not putting them in a compromising situation that smack with conflict of interests.

Miss World MUST also return the On-Stage Competition on its finals' show. The Filipinos (and, again, the rest of the world) wanted to witness an actual competition in a beauty "contest" and not just an awarding ceremony where we are clueless as to the basis of eliminations. Or else, MWO can do us the service of going straight to the announcement of the finalists after the parade of nations and made us just watch them compete for the crown through the finals' Question and Answer portion or hear their prepared speeches as to why they should be Miss World.

Doing the cuts without a known basis for elimination only strengthening the perception that politics is being played within the pageant and that placements are being dispense as mere rewards in a competition where 95% of the results are already "cooked" or pre-determined based on the organizer's whims with only the remaining 5% representing the actual result to be determined during the final show.

Returning the on-stage competition at MW will also help MWO clean its image as a "cooking show" as an on-stage competition will give a semblance of transparency to the show itself, for while the fans will not necessarily agree with the results, they will at least have a better grasp or understanding of the pageant in general and its final outcome.

The lack of on-stage competition at MW can also be blamed for the pageant's dismal ratings as compared to the other pageants' shown in the Philippines.

Of the four international pageants shown in Philippine TV, only MW got a single digit rating: Miss Universe 2017: 23.9%, Miss Earth 2017: 14.1%
Miss Asia Pacific International 2017: 10.0% and Miss World 2017: 4.2% .

Returning the on-stage competition in the finals of Miss World will definitely inject the much needed "action," drama and excitement to the pageant and will give the (Filipino) viewers reason to watch much of the show and stick in front of their television instead of tuning in or viewing just on time for the announcement of winners as the usual case nowadays. Having these viewers stay for the on-stage competition will of course mean good business (rating) for the pageant's broadcast partner (GMA) which will surely be encouraged to continue broadcasting the pageant regularly while at the same time give MWO the leverage to demand from GMA a proper promo or marketing of their pageant in the Philippines. Or better yet. might even convince ABS-CBN to bid for the pageant's telecast in the future.

By giving its broadcast partner reason to sell their product -as a viewable show -through an extensive and expensive marketing but with good profit in sight; as well as reasons to interest the Philippine media to report about it, MWO, can finally hope to make their brand just as popular as their rival pageants in the Philippines. And if it succeeds in cleaning its tarnished image, MWO can even count on the possibility that the Filipinos will finally accept them or be as crazy on MW as they did with Miss Universe, MI and ME.

plain and simple --the REASONS ARE

1.WE HAVE NOT WON IN THE PAST. MISS UNIVERSE HAS BECOME A RECOGNIZABLE BRAND IN THE COUNTRY LARGELY DUE TO GLORIA AND MARGIE. IT ALSO HELPED THAT GLORIA BECAME ACTRESS, MEANING GREATER EXPOSURE FOR THE BRAND.

2. HOSTING--WHEN MARGIE WON, IT SET IN MOTION THE HOSTING OF MISS U IN THE PHILIPPINES, THE FIRST IN ASIA IF I AM NOT MISTAKEN.THAT IS A BIG FACTOR IN MAKING PINOYS ENAMORED WITH MISS U.

THOSE ARE THE TWO MAJOR FACTORS, MISSU BEING ENTERTAINING IS A BONUS THOUGH.

HOWEVER, THERE IS ANOTHER TOPIC WORTH LOOKING INTO--WHY ARE PINOYS NOT INTO MISS EARTH? I MEAN MOST PINOYS, NOT THE FEW PAGEANT, MISSO-MEMBER FANS. DESPITE BEING A HOMEGROWN PAGEANT.

Are Pinoys still not into Miss Earth? I rather think that the Pinoys, specially the non-pageant fans are becoming more aware and even enamored with Miss Earth. Local governments are now even using and recognize the pageant as an effective
partner in the promotion of their eco-tourism destinations. Those who are still in denial of the pageant's growth in the Philippines are just probably affected by colonial and crab mentality. Bear in mind that those students and teachers who were visited by ME delegates during their school tours are effective promoters of the pageant specially among their families and friends. And of course, the residents of the LGUs they visited also became aware of the pageant's existence.

Pinoys are into Miss Earth.....it's only you that isn't. Miss Earth is supported by the Philippine Government's Department of Tourism. Many sponsors are helping Miss Earth because they love Miss Earth...Miss Earth is our own and therefore we love it and we are very proud...Holding a big beauty pageant is not easy and not any other country can afford it.

Really? I think it's the reverse.

Most PINOYS Love Miss Earth. It's those rabid Miss Earth bashers from this site who hate the pageant.

I think it all boils down to TRANSPARENCY and ENTERTAINMENT VALUE.

Miss World is simply BORING. Plain and simple.

And with that type of selection where people kept wondering how the candidates are selected, you begin to wonder if there really are scores or if they are simply picking semifinalist from a roulette.

Filipinos may have celebrated Megan's win and perhaps elevated Miss World several notches at that time. But it will never be greater in the Philippines until MWO learned that the brand should do some major upgrades, production-wise.

Sooner or Later we might not see Miss World telecast again just what happened in 2008-2010 if there is no improvement. Last edition's very low TV ratings gave us the sign that some of Pinoys are no longer interested with the pageant and protested it after the 2016 incident.

One More Thing:
2016 edition: 10.1%
2017 edition: 4.2% (lost by 58%)

In 2016 edition, the pageant was held during Christmas Break for some schools, so the younger viewers were able to watch how Catriona competed in the finals but some of them did not watch because they watched the livestream earlier and were disappointed. This negative effect continued on the next edition and even worse it aired on a late timeslot (although 4.2% at the 11 PM timeslot considered as a hit) and most of them already slept and learned that Laura was eliminated at the Top 15 cut.

You speak and act like a paid troll whose life's mission is to vilify a pageant organization that has done nothing wrong to you. You said your piece many times over already. You are entitled but your personal crusade against ME does not represent the rest of the Filipinos who find the pageant entertaining and worth their time! If you hate Ms Earth, you won't waste time following it up nor watch its every move. Plain and simple, it is!

Just like the various cuisines of the world, I think that beauty per se in its generic sense must be appreciated according to its "class". Connoiseurs of beauty appreciate a pageant's entertainment value and their personal taste no matter the mindless marketing pitch should not be defined nor dictated nor be deterred by mass-driven branding strategies. My 2 cheap cents!

Great read!

And I agree 100%

MWO should bring the on-stage competition if they want people to view the pageant with credibility.

Who in his right mind would partner to telecast a pageant that leaves the viewers clueless as to how the Top 10 or Top 15 or even Top 5 were chosen? Aside from that, finals is a snoozefest. People usually go to the channel when it's announcement of the winners already.

Actually, it was a bit acceptable when they showed to the public the scoreboard. At least, there's something the viewers would be excited about between commercial breaks. (Suspiciously, they removed it in 2016 onwards.) But even that scoreboard remains questionable because the scores were already tabulated before the finals night. And it is not exempted from outside manipulation, ESPECIALLY WHEN THERE IS AN ND in the judging panel.

When the world gets tired of these beauty pageants and businesses would no longer be interested to sponsor, pretty sure, MW will be the first one to go down as MERE MEMORY.

Are you sure???

For me it's different, 95% of people I know don't know about Miss Earth. Those who know, just don't care.

FACT: Most Pinoys (as in 99%) only care about Miss Universe!

Reason #4 I think is the biggest reason. There is really no reason to watch Miss World as it appears now that the final night of the pageant was the coronation ball to announce the winner, runner-ups, semi-finalists (if you can even call them that as there appear to be no onstage competition).

In the very near future,
MW will no longer be shown on TV. Mark my words!

Their long time partner E! Channel has dropped it last year already and well, UK has not shown it for decades already.

No broadcasting company would want to waste their airtime with a show that they know no one watches.

This may sound cruel but there will only be major changes in The Miss World Organization and its show presentation , format, standards and actual selection of winners, and the transparency of its selection process :
1. When Julia Morley resigns and step down from the organization.
2. When Julia Morley is usurped or thrown out of the organization.
3. When Julia Morley passes away.

Otherwise, I expect not even a single gram of hope that this organization will change its colors. As is the case of Mrs. Morley, you can't teach old cats new tricks.
And another thing. Whether you like it or not, The Miss Earth Organization is more transparent and makes more sense with their selection process, therefore making them more credible than even Miss World. They have an actual accounting firm that tabulates the results and that's a fact we can't ignore. And we can't just champion one pageant over the others because the organization behind them provide actual jobs for people to earn their living.

Re: Why Filipinos Are Not So Into Miss World?

The pageant is unpopular although it had a good production. The awful part is that, indeed, there is no on-stage competition as the competition is the things prior and that the final question is the only deliberation round in the pageant. The only beautiful edition that I love is in 2013 and that's when I think it was popular for a short time in the Philippines.

I would credit Evangeline, Ruffa, and Gwendoline for making the pageant known at first and when Megan won, she did make it more known. I think the hype for Miss World went back to its pre-Megan reputation when Catriona did not win.

In the end, Miss World should stop favoring candidates just because they are a former colony or dependency of the United Kingdom or even a member of the Commonwealth of Nations. Some of the girls deserved to win but some did not. The Venezuelan winners deserved to win, and so as Megan. Gwendoline also deserved her placement even if her facial features were unusual (although I do not encourage bashing her) and ''weird'' to some Filipinos, because she worked hard for it. Manushi also deserved to win since she really had a good campaign. But some wins were just questionable and unless Miss World stops this practice, they will never get that much popular.

Miss Earth is a pageant that gained Filipino's interests, not only because it is new, but it is the first beauty pageant to actually utilize the elements as a way of calling their runners-up than simply calling them runners-up. Not only that, it is the first of the Big 5 to have an advocacy built within (the other three only had their advocacies when they began to flourish).

Why don't you go out of your house and ask your neighbors if they know what Miss Earth is and report your findings here???

I know some people who went to receive the ME substandard beauties in 2016 in their provincial tours and all of them said and I quote: "Mas bongga sana kung Miss Universe. Puwede na pagtiyagaan ang ME. Pageant pa din naman."

And before you forget, in 2016 ME edition, the activities were a feasibility study for the DOT for staging Miss Universe the following year. That is why in 2017, DOT left ME like a rag in the front door simply because Miss Universe is gone and done!

In fairness to Miss World,
when Gwen won 1st runner up, half of the frontpage of INQUIRER was a photo of the 3 winners!

Let's get real, newspapers or the media as a whole give prominence to a news story or event based on the element of "rarity" or being rare happenstance. Gwen's second place finish at MW was only the second First RU placement of the Philippines thus it was highlighted in the same way Miriam's FIrst RU win at Miss Universe on 1999.

Note how the Fourth RU victory of Venus Raj got more attention as compared to the much higher placements of Supsup and Tugonon. In fact news on Quiambao and Raj and the attention they got can even be said to have been treated as if they won the title itself and just as treated the same way the media reported on Megan and Pia's victories. As the placements at Miss Universe kept on coming the prominence that the media give diminishes.

I agree with what you said.

The only thing about Carousel is that they want to line up their ME pageant along with Miss Universe/MW/MI because Pinays in those pageants were successful, and may I stress, beautiful and world class. They don't realize that they need to find a girl to represent the Philippines equally beautiful and intelligent as those of their counterparts. That is the reason why they are called BEAUTY PAGEANTS and not BRAIN COLLISION/BATTLE OF THE BRAINS.
