One of the most exciting part of a Beauty Pageant is the announcement of the Semifinalists. The feeling of pressure is at its peak for the ladies, for some the pressure is even higher especially when their countries had never placed. What an accomplishment for those girls to be the first ever delegates from their nation to be included in the Semifinals. But what if what they got was more than what they asked for, because at the conclusion of the competition they were the one wearing the crown. Here are the queens who went from being their countries first Semifinalist to their countries first Winner ( in the four biggest beauty contest in the world. )

Miss Universe

Miss Universe 1952 Armi Kuusela ( Finland )
Debut : 1952Armi Kuusela won Suomen Neito which earned her a ticket to Long Beach for Miss Universe 1952. Not only Armi holds the record for being the first Miss Universe she is also the first Finnish to place and win in the said beauty pageant.

Miss Universe 1953 Christiane Martel ( France )
Debut : 1952Although Christiane Martel did not win Miss France, she was chosen to be the country's representative to the 2nd edition of Miss Universe. The French beauty queen beat 25 other competitor for the title of Miss Universe 1953.

Miss Universe 1958 Luz Marina Zuluaga ( Colombia )
Debut : 1958The year 1958 was the year when the South American country of Colombia debut in Miss Universe. Luz Marina Zuluaga the 1st Runner Up in Señorita Colombia was selected as a replacement of the original who could not compete because she was married. The Colombian beauty queen was crowned by her fellow South American Gladys Zender.

Miss Universe 1965 Apasra Hongsakula ( Thailand )
Debut : 1954After 5 years hiatus the Kingdom of Thailand send a petite Apasra Hongsakula as their official representative in Miss Universe in Miami, Florida. Before flying to the Sunshine State, Pook ( her nickname ) was trained by her Majesty Queen Sirikit. The training paid-off as Apasra walked away with the title of Miss Universe 1965, a feat that her two predecessors failed to do.

Miss Universe 1970 Marisol Malaret ( Puerto Rico )
Debut : 1952The Carribean island of Puerto Rico waited for 18 years to place in Miss Universe. The wait was the sweetest thing ever because auburn-haired, green-eyed Marisol Malaret a former executive secretary bagged the title of Miss Universe 1970.

Miss Universe 1992 Michelle McLean ( Namibia )
Debut : 1981After her Top 5 finish in Miss World 1991, the six footer Miss Namibia Michelle McLean next challenge was awaiting for her in Bangkok, Thailand for Miss Universe 1992. Her experience in the London-based pageant helped was a big help as she was included in the Top 10, and advanced further to win the crown of Miss Universe.

Miss Universe 1999 Mpule Kwelagobe ( Botswana )
Debut : 1999Seven years after the success of Michelle McLean another statuesque African and alumna from Miss World was triumphant in her quest in Miss Universe. The first ever Miss Botswana in Miss Universe, Mpule Kwelagobe, a top student in her country, made history by becoming the first Miss Universe from Botswana, the first Black African Miss Universe and one half of back-to-back win of Black Miss Universe.

Miss World

Miss World 1951 Kiki Hakansson ( Sweden )
Debut : 1951Kirsten " Kiki " Hakansson made history when she was declared the first Miss World back in 1951, edging out 21 British and 5 Foreign competitor in London.

Miss World 1953 Denise Perrier ( France )
Debut : 1951The European country of France never miss sending a contestant to Miss World since the pageant inception but not until 1953 a French woman constitute the Semifinals. After Christiane Martel success in Miss Universe, not to be outdone Denise Perrier brought home the Miss World crown.

Miss World 1955 Carmen Susana Dujim( Venezuela )
Debut : 1955Carmen Susana Dujim made history when she became the first Venezuelan to place in Miss Universe, little she did not she will make another history few months later in Miss World. Not only the Venezuelan beauty queen was the first from her country to compete in Miss World, she was also the first from her country to place and win in Miss World.

Miss World 1970 Jennifer Hosten ( Grenada )
Debut : 1970Jennifer Hosten was the first women from Grenada to graced the Miss World stage and was crowned the winner in 1970. Her victory, however, was clouded with controversies after the favorite from Sweden was proclaimed 3rd Runner up eventhough Miss Sweden got more votes and furthermore the Prime Minister of Grenada was one the panel of judges. Nevertheless, Jennifer would still me remember as the first Miss Grenada in Miss World and first Miss World from Grenada.

Miss World 1975 Wilnelia Merced ( Puerto Rico )
Debut : 1959It took six Miss Puerto Rico, after the island had its first Miss World. In 1975, Wilnelia Merced walked away with the title of Miss World and to date the only Puerto Rican to do so.

Miss World 1979 Gina Swainson ( Bermuda )
Debut : 1971In 1979, the island of Bermuda became the Country of the Year in the world of Beauty Pageant courtesy of Gina Swainson. Gina provided Bermuda it's first placement in both Miss Universe and Miss World. She was awarded the 1st Runner Up position in Miss Universe and was enthroned Miss World 1979.

Miss World 1992 Julia Kourotchkina ( Russia )
Debut : 1992 After the dissolution of U.S.S.R. in 1991, a year after the honor of being the first ever Miss Russia in Miss World belongs to Julia Kourotchkina. The Russian beauty glided her way to the the top and declared Miss World 1992.

Miss World 2009 Kaiane Aldorino ( Gibraltar )
Debut : 1959 For five decades since Gibraltar's debut in Miss World a representative from the British Territory. However, in 2009 a Hospital Clerk made the impossible possible. Kaiane Aldorino beats all odds when she became the first Miss Gibraltar to reach the Semifinals and eventually announced Miss World 2009.

Miss International

Miss International 1960 Stella Marquez ( Colombia )
Debut : 1960 Stella Marquez the winner of Miss Colombia 1959 she acquired the right to compete in Miss Universe 1960. She did not succeed in her pursuit to be the second Miss Universe from Colombia in Miami Beach. However, in Long Beach few months later the Colombian-Polish beauty queen was victorious in her quest to become the first Miss International.

Miss International 1961 Stam Van Baer ( Netherlands )
Debut : 1960Two years after a Miss Netherlands was crowned Miss World, another Dutch won that time around in Miss International. Stam Van Baer became the first from Holland to place and win in Miss International.

Miss International 1962 Tania Verstak ( Australia )
Debut : 1960Tania Verstak a Russian immigrant became the first Miss Australia to win a major beauty pageant. Her victory lead to the embodiment of a perfect Australian womanhood.

Miss International 1969 Valerie Susan Holmes ( Britain )
Debut : 1969Valerie Susan Holmes won the Miss Enfield contest in 1969. Her victory was her ticket to compete in Miss Britain which she eventually won. Valerie became the first from Britain to enter the semis and take the crown at the Miss International contest of 1969.

Miss International 1984 Ilma Urrutia ( Guatemala )
Debut : 1961The most recognizable beauty queen from Guatemala is Ilma Urrutia Chang. In 1984 Ilma end the almost 30 years drought of the Central American country in Miss Universe and most importantly she was named Miss International 1984.

Miss International 2002 Christina Sawaya ( Lebanon )
Debut : 1960The Middle East country of Lebanon had been sending intermittently in Miss International since 1960. But not until 2002, when a Lebanese got recognized in the said pageant. Miss Lebanon 2011 Christina Sawaya non-placement in Miss World and withdrawal in Miss Universe was a blessing in disguise, because she went on to win Miss International 2002. Her accomplishment made her the only Asian who is not from the Philippines Miss International.

Miss Earth

Miss Earth 2001 Catherina Svensson ( Denmark )
Debut : 2001 Catherina Svensson a Law student and part-time model represented Denmark won the 1st edition of Miss Earth. Her triumph was the first for the Scandinivian country in the four biggest beauty pageant.

Miss Earth 2002 Dethroned Dzejla Glavovic ( Bosnia & Herzegovina )
Debut : 2002Who could not Dzejla Glavovic the Bosnian who won Miss Earth 2002. The first ever Miss Bosnia and Herzegovina crowning was one of the most unforgettable moments in any beauty pageant, majority of the contestants walked out when the crystal crown was being transferred to her head. Nonetheless Dzejla will always be the first and so far the only Bosnian to win a major beauty title.

Miss Earth 2002 Winfred Omwakwe ( Kenya )
Debut : 2001 Miss Kenya received all out support from her fellow competitor when she was standing side by side with Miss Bosnia&Herzegovina in the few minutes leading to proclamation of Miss Earth. The Kenyan beauty queen eventually got the title Miss Air but seven months after the coronation night she received a good news. She formally took over the title Miss Earth 2002 after the original winner was dethroned.

Miss Earth 2003 Dania Prince ( Honduras )
Debut : 2002In 2002, Dania Prince a pageant veteran was appointed as the delegate of Honduras to Miss Earth 2003. The 6'1" beauty queen mesmerized the judges and was chosen the keeper of Miss Earth crown in 2003. Her win was the third one under her belt, she won Pacific Queen International 1998 and Miss Americana Latina 2000.

Miss Earth 2005 Alexandra Braun ( Venezuela )
Debut : 2001Venezuela's impressive record in Miss Earth began in 2005 when Sambil Model send Alexandra Braun Waldeck. The blonde Venezuelan made her country the second nation to win all four grandslam after Brazil.

Miss Earth 2007 Jessica Trisko ( Canada )
Debut : 2001After Jessica Trisko Semifinalist finish in Miss Universe Canada 2007, she tried her luck in Miss Earth Canada and won. The beauty queen from Canada surprised almost everybody when she was called in the top 16, the first placement for Canada. She even surprised everybody more when she bagged Miss Earth 2007.
