The list of Beautiful Goddesses who were crowned in their own turf might be a cliche to enumerate as it may only send the wrong message to people who will be reading it as it may be perceived as a "biassed" decision nor an an irrational preference or prejudice.
My second report for UNOLOGY will focus on the uncanny and interesting facts
about some crowning that made the World of Pageantry worth remembering.



Sandwich Crowning

USA-SWEDEN-USA
In 1954, Miss USA Miriam Stevenson won the title. Miss Sweden Hillevi Rombin won in 1955 and after a year she crowned another American beauty Carol Morris.

Hillevi Rombin Schine, Miss Universe 1955 (Sweden) died in a private plane crash in Los Angeles, California in 1996.

VENEZUELA-USA-VENEZUELA
In 1979, a Venezuelan goddess Maritza Sayalero was crowned Miss Universe. She passed her crown to Miss USA Shawn Weatherly in 1980 and a year after,
Irene Sáez gave Venezuela another Miss Universe victory.

It happened again after 40 years for USA. Chelsi Smith won in 1995 and crowned Miss Venezuela Alicia Machado in 1996. The very last Miss Universe to date from USA was won by Brook Mahealani Lee in 1997.

Miss World 1997 Diana Hayden (India)
In 1997, Miss India Diana Hayden crowned Miss Israel Linor Abargil in 1998. Another victory for India took place in 1999 as Yukta Mookhey was crowned Miss World.

Miss Universe 1988 (THAILAND)
Porntip Nakhirunkanok of Thailand was the first Asian Miss Universe winner that was crowned in an Asian soil. It was in Lin Kou Stadium, Taipei, Taiwan on May 24, 1988. This year was also considered the "Year of the Far East Asians" as four of the five finalists came from Asian countries.

Sushmita Sen of India, Miss Universe 1994
The 2nd Asian to be crowned in an Asian soil was Sushmita Sen in 1994. She was crowned in Manila, Philippines and made history as the very 1st indian to win Miss Universe.

The very first Asian to win Miss World in an Asian soil was in 2007 Miss China Zhang Zilin. She was crowned in her native land Sanya, China.

The very first African country to win Miss World was in 1954 for Egypt -Antigone Costanda.

The very first Latina to win Miss World was in 1955 for Venezuela -Susana Duijm.

In 1966, the very first Asian Miss World was crowned, Reita Faria from India.

Jennifer Josephine Hosten won the Miss World 1970 contest, representing Grenada. She became the first woman from her country to win the title.


(Peru) - Gladys Zender
The very first Latina win for Miss Universe was in 1957 for Peru -Gladys Zender.

Akiko Kojima (Japan)
The very first Asian win for Miss Universe was in 1959 for Japan -Akiko Kojima.

Europe holds the first win for Miss World, Miss Universe and Miss Earth.

Armi Kuusela of FINLAND
Kicki Håkansson from Sweden in 1951 and Armi Kuusela from Finland in 1952 for Miss Universe.

Catharina Svensson(DENMARK)
In 2001, Denmark won the very first Miss Earth via Catharina Svensson.

While, the Latina holds the first win for Miss International via Colombia's Stella Marquez in 1960.

Stam van Baer - NETHERLANDS
Netherlands holds the first European country to win Miss International via Contance "Stanny" van Baer in 1961.

The very first Asian to win Miss International is Philippines Gemma Teresa Cruz in 1964.
In fact, the Philippines is the only Far Eastern Asian to have won Miss International. They've got 4 crowns.

Lebanon is 2nd Asian country to win Miss international crown in 2002 via Christina Sawaya.

Winfred Omwakwe of Kenya was the first Miss Earth (2002) from Africa after the dethronement of Miss Bosnia and Herzegovina Džejla Glavović.
[The very first Asian Miss earth happened in 2008 via Karla Paula Henry.
Philippines was also the first Asian to be crowned Miss Earth in the Asian soil until Nicole Faria of India.

The first Miss Earth with the latina flavor is Dania Prince from Honduras in 2003.


In 1973 Philippines' Maria Margarita Moran won its 2nd Miss Universe crown. The following year, they hosted the annual pageant. It is uncunny that the Philippines was colonized by Spain for 333 years and yet they crowned a beautiful Spanish woman, Miss Spain Amparo Muñoz in that said edition.



Miss Israel's Rina Messinger made history as the only Miss Universe from her country 1976. In 1977, another history took place as the first Black Miss Universe was crowned. She is Miss Trinidad and Tobago -Janelle Commissiong.



The Black to Black crowning happened ONLY in Miss Universe in 1998 (Miss Trinidad and Tobago - Wendy Fitzwilliam) and in 1999 (Miss Botzwana - Mpule Kwelagobe)




In 2007, a Japanese beauty was crowned Miss Universe in Mexico (Riyo Mori) and in return, a Mexican goddess was crowned Miss International in Japan (Priscilla Perales).


One of the most famous "Back to Back" win in the history of pageantry would definitely in 2008 and 2009 for Venezuela- Dayana Mendoza and Stefania Fernandez won Miss Universe respectively.

Buth prior to that Miss Universe back to back crowning, Miss World have done it trice already.

The very first Miss World is Miss Sweden Kicki Håkansson. She crowned her fellow Swedish May Louise Flodin in 1952.

Ann Sidney (U.K)

Lesley Langley of the United Kingdom
In 1964, Ann Sidney - Miss United Kingdom won the crown and passed in to another Miss United Kingdom named Lesley Langley in 1965.

In 1999, Miss India Yukta Mookhey won their 4th Miss World crown only to find out that she will be crowning her fellow Indian goddess Priyanka Chopra in 2000.


Mexico to crowned an African

Miss Mexico Guadalupe Jones

Miss Namibia Michelle McLean

Miss Universe 1991 from Mexico Lupita Jones crowned Miss Namibia Michelle McLean in 1992.
Just recently, Miss Universe 2010 also from Mexico Ximena Navarete crowned another African beauty Leila Lopes from Angola.

Miss Universe 2011 was held in Sao Paolo Brazil. The Portuguese speaking country crowned another Portuguese speaking country Angola.

Both were previously colonized by Potugal. All three, Brazil-Portugal-Angola, placed in the Top 16 as well.

A reversed repeat crowning happened at Miss International.

Miss International 1999 Paulina Gálvez from Colombia crowned Vivian Urdaneta Miss Venezuela in 2000.

Crowned in her own TURF and Yet Passed her CROWN at her Own Turf as well.

Brooke Lee was crowned in Miami, Florida USA and she was representing USA. She then passed her crown in 1998 to Miss Trinidad and Tobago in Hawaii (her home state). As we all know Hawaii is still USA so technically she was crowned in USA and crowned her successor in her own country too.


I guess most of these happened in Miss World.
In 1961, Miss United Kingdom Rosemarie Frankland† was crowned in February 1, 1943 in Lyceum Theatre, London, UK and passed her crown to Miss Netherlands Catharina Lodders also in London, UK.

In 1964, Miss United Kingdom Ann Sidney was crowned in Lyceum Theatre, London, UK. She then passed her crowned with her fellow British in
1965 Lesley Langley also at the Lyceum Theatre, London, UK. A year after, she passed her crown to India's Reita Faria also at the Lyceum Theatre, London, UK.

In 1983, another Brit named Sarah Jane Hutt was crowned at the Royal Albert Hall London, UK.
She then passed her crowned in 1984 to a Venezuelan goddess named Astrid Carolina Herrera in June 23, 1963 also in London, UK.
