The 2011 pageant experience is finally over. Not every pageant can satisfy what we wanted but they truly make our pageant year colorful. Every pageant opens a discussion that can break our heart or celebrate our days with unity and color. The diversity of the criteria and the quality each pageant looks after make the pageant experience more interesting and lasting. But what were the moments to remember about the Grandslam Pageants this year?
THE OPENING NUMBER
Miss Universe failed in the entertainment aspect during the opening number. While this year, many claim that Miss Earth got the best opening number. Miss International’s was just a little lame with the girls singing “You Raise Me Up”. On the other hand, I suggest Miss World to make “Dances of the World” as their opening salvo. It would be a blast.
THE UNDERDOGS TAKE THE LEAD!
True enough. The Big 4 pageants this year had tough candidates. Out of a sea of gorgeous ladies, it was hard to predict who takes the crown home and who gets ignored. In fact, the recently concluded Miss Earth is ridiculed here and there for excluding Czech Republic and letting the hometown girl win an elemental crown. Ecuador’s Olga Alvarez won Miss Earth not almost everyone seeing it. Televiewers find Caroline Medina of Venezuela the rightful winner but those who saw it live insisted Alvarez’ win is a deserving one. They say, “She has that extra factor if you see her live.”
To be fair with Miss Earth, Miss Universe kicked off this kind of grandslam upset. Remembering MUO snubbed the Goddess Trinity Deborah H. of Malaysia, Natalie V. of Peru and Iliana P. of Greece. This was the massacre of the year. More bloody than any pageant has ever done. A pre-arrival favorite but not everybody’s Miss Universe won the Nexus crown – in the name of Leila Lopes of Angola. Leila was expected to bid goodbye from the crown after the Swimsuit Competition. To everyone’s shock, she has beaten over the ladies with great body - Venezuela’s Vanessa Goncalves and Puerto Rico’s Viviana Ortiz. Angola’s moment started when she dazzled the viewers with her presence during the evening gown competition. She looked like a winner already.
Miss International 2011 Maria Fernanda Aparicio from Ecuador could not really be considered an underdog or a favorite. She was in everybody’s list as an alternative for the crown. In all fairness, Miss International has consistency in choosing winners. Jessica Barboza of Venezuela was expected to take the crown home but eventually settled for a runner up finish.
Miss World is an exemption of the underdogs taking the lead. Early favorite Venezuela’s Ivian Sarcos took the top plum. While strong pageant contenders Gwen Ruais of Philippines and Amanda Perez of Puerto Rico got their places deservingly.
PRE-PAGEANT EXPERIENCES
From pre-arrival to the pre-pageant activities, 2011 did not fail the pageant enthusiasts. Miss Universe did not really have great activities. Its calendar of activities is purely business. Interviews, Promotional Tours, Photo shoots. Inclined to their advocacy, there’s Operation Smile. But the most liked pre-pageant activity should always be the preliminary competitions for Swimsuit and Evening Gown. Thanks to YouTube, we can make pure assessment of who’s taking it all and who’s leaving the crown.
Miss World and Miss International has toured the ladies to the different magnificent places of the host country. Sadly, there were less media appearances. This should be something that both pageants should improve on especially Miss International. It looks promising. It only takes one global media partner accessible to pageant-craze countries like Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam… and BOOM! Miss International is back.
Miss Earth as expected has met what’s needed when it comes to coverage. Unlimited pictures surfacing the net and candid videos make the pageant more attached to its followers. No wonder it’s been dubbed to surpass MW and MI. But I don’t believe that yet since each pageant has improvements to consider. Miss Earth may be good when it comes to production and coverage but Miss World has better quality of semifinalists. Miss International consistently crowns the most beautiful of the bunch.
I just hope that in the coming years, Miss Earth, Miss World and Miss International would let the viewing public have their own ways of seeing the preliminary competitions like Miss Universe does.
THE GIRLS TO REMEMBER
Aside from the grandslam queens, there are girls we surely would never forget for the rest of our pageant lives. Let me identify these girls by dividing them in two classes.
THE HIGHER CLASS
THE FADING BLOSSOM ALYSSA CAMPANELLA – USA (UNIVERSE)
The time she was crowned Miss USA and even before, almost everyone knew that she’d be the next Miss Universe. Whatever happened, her skinny look and draining aura almost lost her chances to penetrate TOP 15. Undeniably, she remains one of those beautiful faces who will be truly remembered.
THE ULTIMATELY ROBBED TRIUMVIRATE GODDESSES
DEBORAH HENRY – MALAYSIA (UNIVERSE)
A rare gem missed. Malaysia sends certified stunners once in a blue moon but luck did not favor this crown-craved Southeast Asian country. Deborah Henry was the cream of everybody’s list but MUO got the pageant community dismayed.
NATALIE VERTIZ – PERU (UNIVERSE)
Natalie was the most consistent beauty talking about the whole duration of the pageant. She had no unworthy candid pictures and looked regal in her videos. Her class was naturally glowing making her a TOP 5 material or even winning the crown. It was a major headache to see her dance and clap.
ILIANA PAPAGEORGIOU - GREECE (UNIVERSE)
She was the goddess who had unfair media exposure. She was less talked about but worthy of a hype. The real underdog who can pull off a vogue-ish look, a calendar girl aura and a girlfriend you can bring anywhere. I love how mesmerizing her brown eyes are. She can pass as VS Angel.
THE MILLION DOLLAR SMILE SHAMCEY SUPSUP – PHILIPPINES (UNIVERSE)
Aside from having a million dollar smile, she took the pageant stage by storm for having been dubbed as one of the best evening gown presentation in the pageant history. Who would ever forget the tsunami walk? Just like every other Philippine representative, a victim of cyber discrimination but managed to turn the tables around.
MISSING THE CUT SURPRISINGLY VANESSA GONCALVES (VENEZUELA) AND VIVIANA ORTIZ (PUERTO RICO) - UNIVERSE
Two pageant powerhouses surprisingly missed the cut after their forte – the Swimsuit Competition. The world was in rage after knowing both did not make it to the final 10. They had the best shape and fit body among the contestants.
She shared the same fate of the other goddesses from the Universe. More than half of the Miss Earth predictions were disqualified because Sarka did not even penetrate semis. Well… this is Miss Earth what is known for. Better put your goddesses not on the top in the coming years to avoid jinxing her fate.
ALMOST THERE CAROLINE MEDINA – VENEZUELA (EARTH)
Caroline Medina left a solid performance to recall. She is classically dolled up like a true queen. Needless to say, she has one of the best Swimsuit and Evening Gown performance in all grandslam pageants. She handles the question and answer portion professionally despite the interpreter’s incompetence. She should’ve been crowned Miss Earth, in my opinion.
UKRAINE GODDESES
OLESYA STEFANKO – UNIVERSE
Many doubted Leila Lopes’ win because of Olesya’s solid performance. She gave an electrifying number during swimsuit with her hour-glass shaped body while she looked ravishing in the evening gown competition. Her answer was strong enough for a runner up placement but her beauty can steal a crown.
KRISTINA OPARINA – EARTH
She must be one of those pageant girls that we will never forget for leaving a stellar opening performance in Miss Earth. She raised the record of the opening numbers in the pageant history with her “patokada” dance. Aside from a beautiful and engaging personality, she left all of us in awe. She’s now in line with Yendi Philipps.
STAINED SWEDISH BEAUTIES NICOLINE ARTURSON (WORLD) and RENATE CARLJEN (EARTH)
Many believed that Sweden has this strong chance of bringing home 2 crowns in one year. Sending a goddess in Miss World and a super-beauty in Miss Earth, it was expected that Sweden’s rise from a great sleep will be felt. But for whatever reason, both representatives failed to make it to the finalists. Is it because of strong contenders? Weak presentation? Or mere politics?
THE SECOND CLASS
THE LUCKY ONE LAURA GONCALVES - PORTUGAL (UNIVERSE)
They were talking about Philippines, Puerto Rico, Vietnam, Venezuela, and Thailand but… there came Portugal winning the People’s Choice award. Whatever happened, no one knows except the MUO Staff. She was lucky enough to have beaten Venezuela and Puerto Rico. But no one hated her as much since she’s worthy of a spot.
WHAT ABOUT POLITICS?
GWENDOLYN RUAIS (WORLD) AND ATHENA IMPERIAL (EARTH) – PHILIPPINES
Philippines soared high and this year marks the rising of the sleeping Asian Powerhouse. After reviving its life in Miss Universe courtesy of Maria Venus Raj last year, it was expected that bevy of Filipina beauties are competent enough to flock the pageant world. This year, two most criticized grandslam queens from the Philippines got some luck on their side being respectively crowned runners up in their pageants. Ruais was rumored to have been given the 1st princess placement as a gift of the new Miss World franchise holder in the Philippines. Athena on her side, was given the Miss Earth – Water title being the hometown girl and being Miss Earth a Filipino-owned pageant. Well, they remain rumors unless proven.
BOKANG MONTJANE – SOUTH AFRICA (WORLD)
Another woman believed to make it through politics. Her placement was believed to be a gift to Nelson Mandela for accepting a partnership with MWO through their charity projects. Many don’t find her as attractive as those who are left out. Not even the transparent scoreboard convinces pageant enthusiasts about her placement.
THE ULTIMATE CROSSOVER NELLY KWEMALU – TANZANIA (UNIVERSE AND EARTH)
Nelly isn’t the type of girl you knew would win take it all. But she won the hearts of pageant enthusiasts for being bubbly and carefree. She looks happy all the time. And the most amazing thing about her is her ultimate cross-over to four pageants in one year. What a record. Aside from her, known pageant crossovers are Sweden’s Renate Carljen and South Africa’s Bokang Montjane. Both woman mentioned joined MU, MW and ME already but in different years.
THE BATTLE OF INTERPRETERS
THE ONE WHO BROKE A DREAM
What would it have been if the interpreter were better? Do you think Caroline Medina would have won?
THE RING
This woman is hilarious. She just got up from bed and went ahead to attend a funeral. Nevertheless, she consistently reminds me of The Ring.
THE INTERRUPTING INTERPRETER
I tell you, without him interrupting Leila Lopes, Ukraine might just take the crown home. Good job sir!
BACK TO BACK
NATALIE MORALES After hosting Miss Universe 2010, she’s back in 2011! She does great and would look forward to see her in 2012.
JASON VS JASON Two Jason’s hosted two grandslam pageants respectively. Who do you think is hotter? And who did better? I’m for Jason Godfrey.
ECUADOR’S RISE After placing 1st runner up last year in Miss Earth, Ecuador took the crown home this year. Not only that, this underrated country also took the top plum in Miss International.
JAPAN TAKES THE EARTH For the 2nd consecutive year, Japan won the national costume award in Miss Earth. What’s interesting about it is the fact that they’re costumes are not as grandiose but they acquire it based on their performance. Furthermore, making it to semis in 2 years is quite an achievement for them.
PHILIPPINES vs UKRAINE For two straight years in Miss Universe, the most followed and prestigious pageant of the world, Philippines and Ukraine made it to the final 5. Olesya Stefanko was a breath away from the crown. While many believe that Shamcey Supsup had a great shot with her answer.
excellent review but i still find it strange why most people think that miss henry was robbed in miss universe 2011, i am proud to say that i have the winners of miss earth, miss world and miss international on my list although i didnt place them on my top 5, i only failed in miss universe for not placing miss angola and miss ukraine on my list but still i am happy.
Looking for my better half. Someone who deserves me. Someone whom i can call as my own and someone i'll consider to be the last page of my coloring book

in a weird way, i am with you. Never really thought that Miss Malaysia 2011 will take the MU crown. I kind of predicted that she won't even place.
anyway, this review is so detailed and a perfect recap with what happened this year. Nice Job.
Everything is so finite. But don't you think that that's what makes our time, at specific moments, so important?
Very nice. I love the way you write and the choice of words. Very readable but not too shallow. As for Deborah, she's not robbed. She deserves to be a clapper.

You definitely highlighted all the juicy stuffs this year on Big 4 Pageants. Personally? I don't think that Deborah Henry was robbed at all. I am more convinced that Iliana was the one that got robbed though.
Overall, the Big 4 crowned very deserving winners last year although last year has a more diverse set of winners. The Latinas remained Beauty Powerhouse as well as Europe's Ukraine. I was saddened by the 1st RU finish of Olesya but I moved on already.
As for the other minor technical flaws such as interpreters and among others, they are still forgivable. One of the injustices this year is the exclusion of Sarka in missosology cut in Me. This is so unforgivable. It's like ME committed a mortal sin in pageantry.
Overall, Fernanda Cornejo is the most beautiful Big 4 winner this year.
