Following the Math: Miss World Scores

Postby beringer » Sun Aug 19, 2012 11:41 pm

Hi, first time poster, long time reader.

This is the first time that I had ever watched the Miss World pageant. With that said, I am not familiar with the preliminary contests and the scoring given to each one. I am however, mathematically inclined and was a tad confused by the final 15. There are certain things that one must assume before trying to do the simple arithmetic required to come up with the final scores. The purpose is to verify the scores.

The main assumptions of the Scoring Mechanism:

1 - All Miss World 2012 candidates start with zero points before the preliminary.
2 - There were seven preliminary events reported during the MW 2012 pageant. These were shown live during the MW 2012 ceremony in the following order:
a. Interview - IN - (score-board shown after winner announced during live event).
b. Top Model - TM -(score-board shown after winner announced during live event).
c. Beach Fashion - BF -(no score-board shown after winner announced during live event).
d. Special Media - SM -(score-board shown after winner announced during live event).
e. Sport - SP - (score-board shown after winner announced during live event).
f. Talent - TA - (score-board shown after winner announced during live event).
g. Beauty with a Purpose - BwP - (score-board not shown after winner announced during live event).

3 - Each preliminary event gives a given number of points to the candidate depending on their overall position in that portion of the preliminary competition.
4 - The direct sum of the individual scores from each preliminary competition yields a final score.
5 - The 15 highest scores from the preliminary round make up the top 15 candidates that move on in the competition.
6 - The Top 15 were: Mexico, Brazil, USA, Wales, England, Spain, Netherlands, India, China, Philippines, Indonesia, Australia, South Sudan, Kenya and Jamaica.

I will be displaying video snapshots of a full recording of the Miss World (herein: MW) 2012 pageant held in Ordos, Inner Mongolia, China this 18th of August. Each snapshot from the video will have the time-stamp displayed so it will be easy to find . The full recording, taken from Venezuela's Venevision channel, which was used for this analysis is available here (the video is dubbed in Spanish):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zSvY5ufY3gw

The video lasts exactly 1:43:05. Note that the only alteration I made to the each snap-shot is the green text in the bottom, used to identify to which preliminary competition the reported scores correspond to.

Method to verify scores:

- To verify the math, I will chose a girl at random from the initial Top 30 of interview and will be following her score. This candidate is Miss Poland.
- I will keep track of the inclusion of the Top 15 as they appear on the Top 30.

Scoring:

The initial score shown during the live broadcast was Interview:

Image

The apparent maximum score here is 200 points, with the winner being South Sudan with 167 points, and rounding the 30 is Botswana at 155.

Observations:
1 - Candidates from position 31 and below have scores below 155 points.
2 - Of the top 15, Miss USA, Kenya, Indonesia and Philippines are not yet reported in the top 30.
3 - Miss Poland has 157 points.

The next score shown was for Top Model:

Image

South Sudan wins again. As her previous interview score was 167, and now it's 217, the maximum points awarded are 50 for Top Model. The 30th position is now Bulgaria at 169 points.

Observations:
1 - Candidates from position 31 and below have scores below 169 points
2 - Of the top 15, Miss USA and Philippines are not yet reported in the top 30.
3 - Kenya is now part of the Top 30 with 174 points. As the Interview low was 155, the lowest she could have made was 174 - 154 = 20 points in Top Model.
4 - Indonesia is now part of the Top 30 with 175 points. As the Interview low was 155, the lowest she could have made was 175-154 = 21 points in Top Model.
3 - Mexico is now at 198 points, meaning that she earned 35 (198-163) points in Top Model.
4 - Spain is now at 198 points, meaning that she earned 32 (198-166) points in Top Model.
5 - Poland is now at 197, meaning that she earned 40 points (197-157) points in Top Model.

The next event shown during the broadcast was Beach Fashion. The winner was Wales, but no score-board was shown directly after the winner was announced as with the other preliminary events.

The next event was Special Media, won by Miss India. A score-board was now shown:

Image

The leader after 4 preliminary events was now Mexico with 258 points. The 30th position is Czech Republic at 199 points.

Observations:
1 - Candidates from position 31 and below have scores below 198 points.
2 - Mexico earned 60 points from Beach Fashion and Special Media (258 - 198). As she was not the winner of any of those events, it is safe to assume that both were scored events.
3 - Of the Top 15, Miss USA is not yet reported in the Top 30.
4 - Miss Philippines is now part of the Top 30 with 204 points. As the combined Interview and Top Model low score for Top 30 was 169, the minimum she made for BF and SP was (204-168) 36 points.
5 - Poland after BF and SM is reported at 227. This means she earned 30 points combined.

The next event shown was Sport.

Image

The leader at this stage is still Mexico with 283 points. The 30th position is Scotland at 214 points.

Observations:
1 - Candidates from position 31 and below have scores below 204 points.
2 - Of the Top 15, Miss USA is not yet reported in the Top 30.
3 - Poland sits at 237 points, indicating that she was awarded 10 for SP.

The next event shown was Talent.

Image

Interestingly, this is the same score-board with the same scores shown from the SPORTS competition. However, in the video, if you can hear the score-host (English), he states to the effect:

- China takes the lead.
- Mexico is second.
- Jamaica is third, from 10th position previously to 3rd.
- Indonesia at 28th at 225 points.

The only observations regarding the score-board are what the score-host stated. We would expect that Miss China, if this event gives 50 points, is now at a total of 294 points (244+50).

The final event shown was Beauty with a Purpose. No score-board was shown.

There was a later snapshot showing the actual score-board with scores after Talent during the Beauty with a Purpose portion (it is blurry and I zoomed in):

ImageImage

Observations from the Score-board pre announcement of the BwP winner:
1 - The 30th position must be 224 points. Meaning that 31st and below have 223 points and below at this stage of the competition.
2 - Of the Top 15, from the images it is unclear if Miss USA is now included in the Top 30 either by country name (United States of America) or by flag.
3 - Poland seems to be in the second column of the zoomed image at the third row. Assuming she earned no points, she would still be standing at 237 points.
4 - It is not a given whether or not scores were awarded for BwP and if so, what those were.

The final announcement was of the TOP 15:

Image

The scores reflected seem to be those from pre-Beauty with a purpose. That is, assuming no score was given to BwP. If scores were given, then those were not displayed.

Observations:
1 - The minimum score reported in the Top 15 is Miss USA at 152.
2 - Miss USA came in 3rd place in BwP.
3 - Assume Poland earned no points, and is still at 237 (at Sport stage).

Comparing the scores from the TOP 15 image and the last clear score report (SPORT)

Image

General Conclusions:

1 - All candidates did start from zero points at the beginning of the competition.
2 - With the exception of Beauty with a Purpose, for which it isn't clear if points were awarded, all other preliminary competitions did grant overall points.
3 - If points were awarded to BwP, then India only won 10, as her final score shown in TOP 15 was 271 from 261from the last clear score-board (SPORT).
4 - TOP 15 scores only include, IN, TM, BF, SM, SP and TA.
----------- If in effect the scores shown in the TOP 15 do not include BwP scores, then how did USA with 152 manage to get in.
----------- If in effect the scores shown in the TOP 15 do not include BwP scores, then how did Kenya with 214 points get over Poland at a minimum of 237?
----------- If in effect the scores shown in the TOP 15 do not include BwP scores, then how did Indonesia with 225 get over Poland with a minimum of 225?

5 - If the order shown in the TOP 15 is the correct order, but the scores are from the previous events not including Beauty with a Purpose scores, then:

---------- Miss USA as a 3rd place finisher for BwP must have earned more than 85 points to overcome the mimimum score of Miss Poland at 237 since the last clear score-board (SP) was shown (237-152).
---------- Miss Kenya as a 5th place finisher for BwP must have earned more than 23 points to overcome the minimum score of Miss Poland at 237 since the last clear score-board (SP) was shown (237-214)
---------- In effect, Kenya had to have earned more than 36 points to overcome the minimum score of Sweden, a top 5 score come SP (250-214).

It is unclear to me how the scores were assigned after the SPORT (SP) results. Miss USA to make up the 85 point minimum differential with Miss Sweden must have been a top contender in both Talent and Beauty with a Purpose (if this is scored). But it appears that BwP was not scored.

Pending Questions:

1 - Miss USA? If her SPORT score was at 152 how did she get 85+ points to in TA and BwP to best Poland?
2 - Miss Kenya? How did her TOP 15 score of 214, which is the same as that reported after SPORT, beat Poland?
3 - Were scores assigned to BwP? If so, then India should be way ahead. That, is unless the 10 point differential is for the Talent portion. Assuming BwP real points were not shown in the TOP 15 announcement.

Feel free to do the same exercise with other candidates like Sweden, Guadeloupe, Kazakhstan, Hong Kong, Colombia, Northern Ireland.

As a personal note, I am from the US.

Note: Edited 8/19/2012 - Changed Top 15 data chart for an Excel printout for better reading/clarity.

Re: Following the Math: Miss World Scores

Postby BBQ » Mon Aug 20, 2012 4:27 am

I think the maximum score for interview this year is 170 instead of 200 as last year
2 - Of the top 15, Miss USA, Kenya, Indonesia and Philippines are not yet reported in the top 30.

No, Look at your first pic, Miss Indonesia's interview point is 160
I guess:
- The maximum score for TM/BF/SP/SM/TA is 50 points. The semi finalists each Challenge Event get 20 points (Top 57 TM get 15 points). For the finalists each challenge event:
+ The 10th: 30 points
+ The 9th: 32 points
......
+ The 5th: 40 points
- The maximum score for BWP is 100

Maybe Miss USA score is 252 not 152 coz her total challenge points is 115 (Top 57 TM, Top 25 Talent, 2nd runner up BWP=15+20+80) and maybe 137 pts for interview

Thanks for the catch of Indonesia during the Interview portion.

The problem I quickly see with what you propose is that for USA to have 252 points rather than 152, you have to sum up the score from BwP. If you look at the TOP 15 score-board, it seems that the BwP scores have not been added or included at all. Otherwise, the other BwP finalists would have higher scores like Kenya (5th BWP) or Indonesia (4TH BWP) for instance. If you look at Kenya, her score stayed at 214 since the last clear score-board which was SPORT, while Indonesia from the SPORT score-board to the TOP 15 was only given 10 points (from 215 to 225 final).

So, I would safely conclude that the score from USA did not include the suggested 80 points from BwP.

The question also remains, if Mexico was granted 50 points based on her BwP, then that would give her 333 overall. How did Brazil score enough during prelim to pass her. Brazil would have required 81+ points, assuming Mexico did not earn a single point during the semi-final portion (cut to TOP 7).

Note: Edited for grammar.

A Miss World for China!!!

Postby Bb. Pilipinas » Mon Aug 20, 2012 6:11 am

I watched over and over again the Miss World final night online and there's something wrong on how they selected the TOP 30 and the TOP 15 this year unlike last year. It becomes more suspicious that the winner came from the host country itself. AMONG THE TOP 7 CHINA IS THE ONLY ONE WHO CAN'T EVEN SPEAK ENGLISH LANGUAGE AS AN ESSENTIAL WAY TO CONNECT WITH PEOPLE, THEY TRY TO DO AN INTERPRETATION OF WHAT SHE SAID AND IF I WERE A JUDGE THAT NIGHT I WOULD GAVE HER A LOWER SCORE DUE TO A BAD TRANSLATION.

I RATHER CHOOSE SOUTH SUDAN IF WE ARE GOING TO TALK ABOUT "THE BEAUTY WITH A PURPOSE" THAT MISS WORLD IS SELLING TO THE PUBLIC IN ALMOST 3 DECADES NOW UNDER JULIA "UGLY" MORLEY!

SUCK BIG TIME..... I RATHER CHOOSE WALES OR JAMAICA INSTEAD!!!

Thanks for the wonderful analysis. Your observations are easy to read and understand. Yes, there are so many questions or confusions on scoring that only Miss Julia and her team can answer. Overall, the leaderboard lacks credibility.

Dear Missosologist,

How can we escalate this issue to MWO in order for us to get the accurate scores per candidate in all fast track contests to better understand the pattern of selecting the top 15? They have shown the scores during the live telecast but never explained how it works. Kudos to the person who created this thread and humble enough to share his own observation. Please give us answers before I conclude something fishy happens.

Sincerely Yours,
Angel

Good Morning Mrs. Julia( It has been one hell of a rigged co

Good Morning Mrs Julia

I couldn’t believe my ear when I heard the “Good morning “ from Miss China PR on the Miss World final question round that night but well it wasn’t her fault anyway because of the MWO rules and regulations doesn’t state that the winner of the pageant should speak fluent English. I just wanted to take this word ‘GOOD MORNING’ to say hi to Mrs. Morley for the unforgettable night of the 2012 Miss World that was held on this past August 18. The world wide pageant fans will remember that night so well as we couldn’t believe how it went down.

The pageant was over2 days ago but there are too many questions unanswered, not only for us Thais but I guess for the rest of the world who had follow this prestigious competition. First of all I would like to Congratulate Miss China PR who was crowned MW 2012. I do think that over all she did a pretty good job and somehow deserves the winning but I have tons of questions to ask Mrs. Morley. Just to begin with a lot of suspicious changing of fast tracks rules and other regulations that was changed day by day without any notice or written in paper. Well the British constitutions are not written in paper as well so I guess it can be the same as Mrs. Morley is a British citizen herself. There is no subtle rules or standard regulations to judge MW to us pageant fans it seems like the rules of this competition can change in order to suit the organizer and sponsor’s own benefits ( Who pays more get better chance of winning Allegedly)

The fast tracks that were supposed to be the way for all the contestants to earn points to be in the next round are the most ridiculous one. Some had been announced on the official website, some they have just plainly told the finalist that they had made it to the next round (so professional). There is no solid prove about who made it on the Multimedia awards until the final night (We have to go on and check the contestants Facebook page one by one to find out) but the worst case is the case of Miss World Philippines who supposedly had won the best Designer award (which her dress is stunning and totally deserved it) but at the end they had changed from her win to be just a top 10 finalist and the winner had never been announced eventually. Is it because of they forgot or there is another hidden agenda?

The Multimedia awards had changed to Social Media awards the last minutes on the coronation night. How the heck did they judge this damn fast track? It is obvious to the rest of the world that this awards itself is judged by the LIKES on the facebook page that the MWO has created for all 116 contestants to tell their stories and update their pictures. Without any explanation whatsoever the MWO had decided to give the award to Miss World India (whose organization has a serious ties with Mrs. Morley and the MWO) If it is based on how the contestant update her profile this awards should have gone to Miss World macau whom did a pretty fantastic job on her profile page. And if to judge by how they know to use the modern technology? Miss World Vietnam had it all to win. I’m not being a sore loser that Thailand didn’t win (for the obvious reason) It was just I need to know the answer about how the heck that you guys JUDGE this award? PERIOD!

Another mistake that I think it shouldn’t have happened to the world class beauty pageant is the damn score board (they said it is the fair game to have this score board but the way I see it. It is not fair and a there’s a lot of holes to fill in) There is no way this is a so-called FAIR GAME.

Image

Above is the interview score board. I will make my point by counting the points of all the winners from each Fast tracks so we will know the full points of each one by one. Please note that Miss South Sudan has the highest points for this round and other contestants respectively.

Image
This is the score board after the Top Model had been announced, according to Miss World South Sudan points it means the winner gets 50 points but the gets fishy when the points of Miss India and Miss Wales who was the semi-finalist (top 47) but didn’t make it to top 10 they each got another 20 points (interesting facts!, the other semifinalists got only 5 points)

Miss Spain who was in the top 10 got 30 points and it gets even fishier when Miss Mexico and Miss China PR who were also in the top 10 as Miss Spain but theirs points got 35 added. What the hell?

Image
The winner of this fast track is Miss Wales. From the points that has been added to the winner it means that the full points of this fast track is 60ps.
Surprisingly Miss China PR who placed only in top 10 for beach fashion got the amazing 50 points added but to Miss Australia who is also placed the same only got 35 points added to her credit. Miss Indonesia and Miss Netherlands who didn’t make the top 10 also get a freaking impressive 30 points.

Image
This is the score board after the Multimedia award has been announced which doubtfully Miss India won, followed by Miss Mexico.
Miss India got another 30 points, 25 points had been added to Miss Mexico who came in second.
Miss China PR didn’t make it to this fast track so the highest point of this round is only 30 (SurpriseM?)
Then all hell break lose after the beauty with a propose winner had been announced. I just couldn’t believe that it is happening in the world’s so-called most prestigious beauty pageant!

Image
After the winner has been announced so we finally found out who made it to the top 15.
Miss India = 20 winner
Australia = 10 1st runner up
Indonesia = 10 2nd runner up

Poor Miss Kenya who was placed 4th who should have got 10 points added but didn’t. Then again when Miss China PR won the talent award, She got an amazing 50 points added which raised more questions.

And the poor Miss Sweden who got higher score than the other contestants didn’t make it to top 15. The one who got less point made it. You know it doesn’t make any sense at all!!!

At first I thought all the points will be erased after all the fast track winners were announced but NO! The credit points of Miss Mexico were the same both in top 30 and 15. So WTF?

I would like to ask Mrs. Morley. So this is how you operate the world class beauty pageant? Have you ever taken a math class?

I would like to tell you guys about my suspicion for this year MW.

The points for the winner of the fast track that Miss China PR didn’t make it to the finalist like MULTIMEDIA and BWP are only 20-30 points. Last year BWP winner points is 30 while the others are only 20 points (Mrs. Morley stated that BWP is the most important thing in this competition) but this year turned out to be the lowest.

The fast track that Miss China PR won or made it to the final top 10 has the highest points. Top Model, Beach fashion and Talent. (50=-60 points)

I would like the world to know what the MWO had done this year. To Mrs. Morley, The damaged has been done. If you carry on doing what you’re doing, in the near future everybody will see the truth. No one wants to compete in a rigged and fixed pageant and one by one they will be out and what you will have left will be just a legacy that your late husband made and had been destroyed by you.

hi beringer!

i followed your post to the detail and now i am a little enlightened.

i have these theories:

1. The scores shown in the board after the TALENT were actually the scores after SPORTS. The board is one event late.
2. The scores shown in the TOP 15, which is after the BWAP, were actually the scores after TALENT. Again, the board is one event late.
3. The ranking shown in the TOP 15 already reflects BWAP results, but the organizers forgot to change the scores. Again, the board is one event late. This is why we see the ranking mixed up. Maybe, the reason why Miss United States got in was because BWAP is worth many many points (the host stressed that it is worth more than the other challenge events).

However, there is still one irregularity:
In my point no. 2, how can India (271-261) and South Sudan (267-257) have earned 10 points each when they were not even TALENT finalists?

And there is one unanswered question:
In my point no. 3, if Miss United States got 152 after TALENT (because my theory is that the TOP15 scores were actually post-TALENT and pre-BWAP scores), then she should have scored at least 246 points after BWAP to be able to place higher than Netherlands (which had 245, which is assumed to be her pre-and post- BWAP score as she is not a BWAP finalist). To get 246, Miss United States' BWAP score must have been 94! How many points is BWAP really worth?

PLEASE NOTE:
Highest score for BWP is 100points
10 points is the minimum points awarded to a girl in every preliminary provided she takes part in it.
(now a girl may take part in the pre-preliminary as well. A contestant can get a zero only in interview or if she completely refuses to take part in any preliminary. Basically 10 is participation points)

AND NOW CONTINUE YOUR RESEARCH

MISS PHILIPPINES BEATBOXING YOUTUBE WENT VIRAL ALL OVER THE WORLD MAKING MISS WORLD POPULAR MORE THAN EVER. THE NEWS WAS ALL OVER THE PLACE... SHAME ON YOU JULIA AND CHINA.....................

NOW LET US COMPARE WHY CHINA WON IN MISS WORLD TALENT 2012 OVER MISS PHILIPPINES BEATBOXING!!!

MISS PHILIPPINES BEATBOXING IN MISS WORLD TALENT 2012

VERSUS

MISS CHINA SINGING IN MISS WORLD TALENT 2012

GOSH, ISN'T IT OBVIOUS???? I CAN SING OR BELT BETTER THAN CHINA AND I'M PRETTY SURE MOST OF YOU GUYS OUT THERE.....

CHINA WINNING MISS WORLD TALENT 2012 IS AN INSULT TO THE EDUCATED PEOPLE OF THE WORLD. YOU CAN TELL THE RESULTS WERE COMPLETELY MANIPULATED SO CHINA WILL EDGE OUT PHILIPPINES IN THE FINALS OF MISS WORLD 2012 HELD IN CHINA!!! THE RESULT WAS RIGGED AND FUCKED UP BIG TIME!!! HAVE A SHAME PLEASE CHINA!!! WE KNOW WHO DESERVES IT AND WE KNOW WHAT YOU DID..... SHAME SHAME SHAME!!!

I UNDERSTAND YOUR SENTIMENTS, I PERSONALLY LIKED PHILIPPINES BECAUSE SHE WAS UNIQUE AND SPECIAL!
HOWEVER MULTI-TALENT COMPETITIONS ARE USUALLY UNFAIR BECAUSE, VARIOUS TALENTS ARE VERY DIFFICULT TO COMPARE AND JUDGE AT THE SAME TIME!
CHINA HAD A VERY GOOD DELIVERY OF A CHINESE OPERA SONG SUNG IN HEAD VOICE.
MOST PEOPLE WITHOUT THE KNOWLEDGE OR LIKING TOWARDS OPERA MUSIC WOULD NOT LIKE HER PERFORMANCE...WHICH IS MOST OF THE WORLD!
HOWEVER I'D RATHER ASSUME THAT THE JUDGES HAD PREVIOUSLY HEARD CHINESE OPERA, AND MISS CHINA GAVE A DECENT DELIVERY WHICH MADE THEM MORE INCLINED TO GIVE THEM THE TOP SPOT.
AND JUST FOR THE RECORD, I KNOW A LOT OF PEOPLE WHO LOVE LISTENING TO OPERA, AND THOUGH THEY CAN'T PICK OUT THE MINUTE DEFECTS IN THE PERFORMANCES, THEY'D STILL PREFER IT TO BEAT BOXING.
IT'S JUST A MATTER OF TASTES.
I LOVE MUSIC IN GENERAL. AND DO POSSESS A DECENT KNOWLEDGE OF MUSIC TOO.
MISS PHILIPPINES: GREAT BEAT-BOXING, DECENT SINGER, LACKED A TINY BIT IN LIVE PRESENTATION.
MISS CHINA: BEAUTIFUL TONE OF HEAD VOICE, QUITE A FEW PITCHING & TECHNICAL FLAWS, WONDERFUL GRACE OF SONG DELIVERY!
WHILE I PERSONALLY DO NOT THINK THEIR TALENTS ARE COMPARABLE, I DO BELIEVE A COMPETITION OF THIS CALIBER SHOULD BE JUDGED ON INTERNATIONAL APPEAL, AND I AS A JUDGE WOULD GIVE PHILIPPINES THE EDGE.
BUT JUDGING BASED ON LOCAL AUDIENCE APPEAL, AND JUDGES PERSONAL CHOICES I UNDERSTAND THAT THEY WOULD FAVOUR CHINA.

Kudos for the effort!
Your analysis is comprehensive and easy to follow.
The scores indeed was confusing when they announced Top 15 especially when the host mentioned about announcing the Top 15 in order.

I guess the scores shown at that point were not the final scores. It was obviously inconsistent.
The tabulators are to be blamed and that person handling the big screen (not the tablet used by the score host). Apparently, the scores shown on the big screen were not in synched with the scores being read by the old man score host.

The mistake of MWO was that, they did not clarify it. Perhaps none of them is good in arithmetic or maybe they assumed that viewers are dumb to notice about the inconsistencies.

Or perhaps the program or technology they used was "Made in China".

MWO needs to clarify the scores to clear their name.

Bad mistake of removing CONNECTICUT in my Top 15 the last minute. Now I'm disqualified in PG LOL!

Miss Philippines score in the Interview might not be included in the Top 30 as there are a lot of candidates who were sharing the same position. She earned points from Top Model, Beach Fashion and the biggest she earned from fast track was from her Talent!

Thank you for sharing this thread and it helped many forumers to see what really happened! Kudos!

Thread as such deserves much appreciation! You are a diamond in the rough! Hoping to see more post from you! :hx :hx :hx
